Hotel check-in and a private-home stay have different practical steps.
Staying at a hotel
The government guide describes presenting your passport or another accepted identity document at reception. Beijing’s official guidance says hotel staff handle accommodation registration during check-in. Keep your booking details and Chinese hotel address available.
Staying somewhere else
Official guidance requires foreigners staying outside a hotel to complete accommodation registration with the local public security authority within 24 hours of arrival, personally or through the host. Beijing provides online and in-person channels; do not assume that Beijing’s online service applies in another city.
Ask before you arrive
Our suggestion: confirm the exact property, check-in arrangements, late arrival contact and payment method in advance. For a home stay, agree with your host how registration will be completed.
