China in Reach · In-depth city guide
西安
Xi’an.
An underground army, Tang treasures and an evening on the wall. Give the history room to become a journey.
Plan a week in Xi’anThree full sightseeing days for a selective introduction; four or five if museums and unhurried visits matter to you. Add arrival and departure separately.
Treat the Terracotta Army as an out-of-centre day, including both journeys and your chosen museum areas.
Shaanxi History Museum and Xi’an Museum are different institutions. A reservation at one does not enter the other.
Use the exact terminal and Chinese railway station printed on your booking. “Xi’an” is not one universal arrival point.
Xi’an is easiest to enjoy when you let its different worlds stay different: the Terracotta Army outside the centre, archaeological collections in museums, a walk on a later city wall, a living food neighbourhood and a modern Tang-inspired evening district. Each asks for a different kind of attention.
This city guide connects eight detailed place guides. Use them for the individual objects, buildings, photographs and original visitor notices; use this page to choose a base, shape full sightseeing days and avoid the most costly name and booking mix-ups. All proposed sequences are editorial suggestions.
Read the city
Several places, several scales.
Our suggestion: organise your plan into a central-city outing, museum time south of the old centre, and a separate Lintong-area journey. Nearby names can conceal different gates, reservations and substantial travel.
The City Wall is a later fortification than the Tang culture celebrated in the southern night district. A walk under modern Tang-style lighting is a different experience from looking at excavated objects.[7][18]
The wall, towers and food neighbourhood
Choose a manageable section of the wall, then decide whether you want a tower interior or an exterior view and a meal. Sajinqiao and Beiyuanmen are different streets; use the actual business name and location rather than a generic “Muslim Quarter” pin.
Two museums and two pagodas
Shaanxi History Museum is not Xi’an Museum; the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda at Da Ci’en Temple is not the Small Wild Goose Pagoda in the Xi’an Museum grounds. Make the Chinese name part of your booking check.
The Terracotta Army / Lintong direction
The museum’s published transport example uses Huaqingchi and a further road connection. It does not establish a direct train to the pits. Our suggestion: protect enough of the day for the museum rather than adding every outlying attraction.[2]
Choose what interests you
Eight ways into the city.
Each place below has a full in-depth guide. Time allowances are editorial starting points; the attraction’s own access and current conditions decide the visit.
01 · A substantial out-of-centre day
秦始皇帝陵博物院
Terracotta Army & Lishan Garden
An excavated army and a larger burial landscape
The bronze chariots moved to the Lishan Garden area. Do not search for them in the old Army-area hall or assume one pit is the entire museum.[3]
The choiceChoose the museum areas you want and protect the journeys.
Read the in-depth guide02 · A chosen section, not necessarily a circuit
西安城墙
Xi’an City Wall
A different perspective on the centre
Foreign visitors need to follow the operator’s document-check and paper-ticket exchange instructions. A purchase QR and a completed entry process are different steps.[6]
The choiceChoose walking, cycling or a short viewpoint visit deliberately.
Read the in-depth guide03 · A focused architectural visit
西安钟鼓楼
Bell & Drum Towers
Two towers with different roles
The 2026 notice phases Bell and Drum exhibition-room works on different dates while keeping platforms open. Read the dates before paying; reopening is not assumed.[8]
The choiceChoose an interior visit only after checking the current works.
Read the in-depth guide04 · A museum-focused half day or longer
陕西历史博物馆
Shaanxi History Museum
A province through its archaeological objects
The main museum and Qin–Han branch have different locations and admission arrangements. The current Chinese visitor policy takes precedence over older English reseller advice.[4]
The choiceA successful main-building booking and a separately chosen paid gallery shape the visit.
Read the in-depth guide05 · A museum-and-garden half day
西安博物院 · 小雁塔
Xi’an Museum & Small Wild Goose Pagoda
A different museum, a different pagoda
A museum reservation does not create a physical tower-climbing opportunity. The detailed guide separates the present admission instructions and an on-site XR reconstruction.[13]
The choiceLeave time for both the objects and the grounds.
Read the in-depth guide06 · A separate temple visit
大雁塔 · 大慈恩寺
Giant Wild Goose Pagoda & Da Ci’en Temple
Xuanzang, translation and brick architecture
The modern memorial courtyard is not Xuanzang’s preserved home. Our detailed guide explains the tower, steles and temple buildings with their actual identities.[10]
The choiceTemple admission, possible tower ascent and the surrounding public squares are separate decisions.
Read the in-depth guide07 · One meal and a short walk
洒金桥
Sajinqiao food neighbourhood
A living neighbourhood with food traditions
Community reporting describes homes, businesses and everyday services sharing the streets. Keep doorways clear and ask before close photographs.[14]
The choiceChoose dishes and ask ingredients rather than racing every business name.
Read the in-depth guide08 · A flexible evening
大唐不夜城
Great Tang All Day Mall
Poetry, public art and a modern Tang dream
The operator’s programme allows content, place and time changes. A dated holiday schedule is not a permanent nightly promise.[19]
The choiceTry one programme that suits you; keep paid add-ons distinct.
Read the in-depth guideTime is part of the experience
Give the days a shape.
These are full sightseeing days. Add your arrival, departure and any intercity travel around them. The outlines do not automatically change your saved itinerary.
A selective first visit
The essentials, with a deliberate museum choice
- Keep
- One out-of-centre day and two different city days
- The trade-off
- You will not enter every museum, temple and tower
Central city and one meal
Choose a manageable wall section, decide about the towers after checking the works, and make a food stop the relaxed part of the day.
The Terracotta Army day
Protect the travel and museum time. Choose whether to include Lishan Garden; do not add a second distant attraction just to fill an evening.
Choose your museum, then decide about the evening
Reserve either Shaanxi History Museum or Xi’an Museum as the main visit. A short Tang-district evening is optional if your energy and current access allow.
Reorder around confirmed reservations, weekly closures and weather. These are editorial outlines, not timed journeys or confirmed admissions. The itinerary builder has its own supported route patterns.
Open the itinerary builderChoose a base
Start with the days you want to have.
The areas below are starting points for a hotel search, not inspected hotels or availability promises. Compare the actual door-to-station route, road crossing, room noise and luggage arrangements before choosing.
Ask about your arrival time, passport check-in, registration, payment and deposit, lift access and the room’s heating or air-conditioning. National guidance places hotel-stay registration with the hotel; carry the valid travel document needed for your stay.[22]
Bell Tower / South Gate / central city
Investigate a central base if the wall, towers and food neighbourhood are priorities. Our suggestion: trade a famous address for a more practical entrance if the property sits down a vehicle-restricted or noisy lane. A “wall view” does not mean an ascent gate is directly outside.
Xiaozhai / pagoda and museum district
Investigate the southern city if museum visits and an evening near the pagoda matter most. Our suggestion: compare journeys to the exact museum gate, not just the area name. The two major museums and the two pagodas still have distinct locations.
A station or airport stay
Consider this for a specific early or late connection. Our suggestion: calculate the cost to your sightseeing days as well as the saved transfer. A station hotel is useful only when it is near the station on your actual ticket.
Arrive with the right name
Airport, North, East or the central station?
Our suggestion: save the Chinese hotel address, the terminal or station name and a contact method before travelling. Leave the arrival day flexible enough for immigration, luggage, transport and check-in.
Xi’an Xianyang International Airport / 西安咸阳国际机场
T5 entered service in February 2025. Check your airline’s current terminal instead of assuming that every flight uses T5 or that an older transfer guide still matches today’s operation.[25]
Line 14 has an Airport (T5) / 机场(T5) station. The primary opening notice describes its connection with T5’s ground-transport centre. Use the station for your actual terminal; the older Airport West (T1, T2, T3) name is a different station.[24]
The T5 inbound service platform launched in June 2026 with travel, transport, payment and multilingual-service functions. Current desk hours and an individual service’s availability have not been tested.[21]
Our suggestion: for a late flight, check the actual operating hours and a road-transport alternative before relying on metro. No universal last bus, fixed taxi fare or guaranteed connection is established here.
Xi’an North / 西安北站
Use 西安北站 when that is the station on your rail booking. Metro Lines 2, 4 and 14 connect with North station. Check the current interchange, onward route and last connection for your actual destination.[11]
Our suggestion: allow for the path between rail platforms, exits and metro—not just the time aboard a train. This guide does not offer a universal airport-to-rail minimum connection.
Xi’an East / 西安东站
East station opened on 30 June 2026; Line 5’s East station also entered service that day. It is a real, separate arrival choice, not an interchangeable name for North or the central station.[26][27]
Our suggestion: check the exact departure station again before leaving the hotel, especially after a booking change. No train route or speed class alone guarantees which Xi’an station you will use.
Xi’an Railway Station / 西安站
Keep 西安站 distinct from 西安北站 and 西安东站. Our suggestion: use the Chinese station name and departure details on the confirmed ticket in your map or taxi request. A city-level search result is not a station confirmation.
The ticket and its passenger document
The national visitor guide explains passport-based real-name booking and boarding with the original valid document used to buy the ticket. Account verification, a booking request and a confirmed train seat are different steps. Follow the current railway instructions for your journey.[29]
Move between the visits
Save energy for the places.
Our suggestion: use metro for suitable city journeys and a planned road connection when the actual gate, luggage or return hour makes that easier. Compare the whole route from door to entrance, including station exits and crossings.
The operator’s 2024 report identifies foreign-card ticket purchases through staff at 13 customer-service centres. It describes counter service, not a verified foreign-card tap at every gate. Confirm current service and keep another payment method available.[23]
A station is not the final entrance
The Terracotta Army’s published route continues by road beyond Huaqingchi. A pagoda station is not the temple ticket gate. For museum reservations, use the actual institution and booked branch rather than the nearest well-known landmark.[2]
Plan the return before the performance
Our suggestion: decide how you will return before committing to a late programme. The 1–7 October 2026 tourism-loop notice is a holiday arrangement whose dates have ended; it is not a current everyday connection.[20]
Walking and cycling are different plans
Our suggestion: choose a short wall section if walking is the point of the visit. Check rental conditions separately if cycling matters. No full-circuit completion time, working lift or continuous accessible route is guaranteed by this guide.
Reserve the anchor
Know what the booking buys.
Reserve each institution under its own name and branch. These distinctions summarise the detailed guides; the original operator decides current availability and admission. No purchase has been made on your behalf.
| Visit | Published arrangement | The useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Terracotta Army | Real-name booking with the document used for entry.[1] | Two museum areas and a road journey; a guide package is not automatically admission. |
| Shaanxi History Museum | Main-building reservation and Qin–Han branch rules differ.[4] | Choose the branch and any paid exhibition intentionally; keep the actual successful order. |
| Xi’an Museum | New system releases reservations five days ahead at 18:00 China time; foreign visitors reserve and use manual document exchange.[12][13] | This is a different museum and booking from Shaanxi History Museum. |
| City Wall | Foreign visitors follow the current paper-ticket exchange process.[6] | Ask about an alternative if facial comparison is unsuitable; entry is separate from bicycle rental. |
| Bell & Drum Towers | Current museum works and passport booking instructions must be read together.[8][9] | Construction dates and the PRC-citizen concession restriction matter before payment. |
| Da Ci’en Temple / Giant Wild Goose Pagoda | Confirm the actual temple ticket and any separate tower access.[10] | Current adult temple tariff and full foreign-passport transaction remain unverified in our research. |
| Sajinqiao neighbourhood | A public-street meal outing; order at the actual business.[14] | Street access is not admission to private homes, a mosque or a paid food tour. |
| Great Tang All Day Mall | A street walk and a paid commercial add-on are distinct.[19] | Read today’s programme; confirm each venue, costume/photo or digital product separately. |

Open the detailed guide and original operator before buying. An official booking page, an available tour listing and a successful reservation are different things.
Weather changes the plan
Keep an indoor and an outdoor choice.
The municipal climate description gives distinct seasons: changeable, windy spring; hot and rainy summer; cooling autumn with prolonged-rain risk; and cold winter. Long-term climate is not a forecast for your dates.[28]
In hot weather
Our suggestion: shorten exposed wall time, plan rests and keep a museum choice where you have a reservation. Do not assume a late night cancels the effect of a long hot day.
In rain or a cancellation
Our suggestion: switch the outdoor plan only after checking whether your indoor alternative is open and bookable. A museum cannot serve as an automatic weather backup without its own entry arrangements.
In colder weather
Our suggestion: plan layers and a shorter outdoor section, then check seasonal last entry separately for each venue. A photograph of a brightly lit evening does not establish the temperature, wind or current operating hours.
Eat with curiosity
Choose a meal before a list of stalls.
Our suggestion: make one seated meal the centre of a food outing, then leave room for a small extra if you still want it. Historic menu photographs, queues and “best in Xi’an” claims do not establish today’s price, ingredients or your own taste.
Paomo and xiaochao
The national heritage record describes paomo’s small pieces of bread cooked into a beef or lamb bowl. Ask which style and animal you are ordering, and whether you break the bread yourself. A named craft listing does not certify every business.[15]
Our suggestion: use the detailed Sajinqiao guide for the difference between regular paomo and xiaochao, plus Chinese questions about portion, stock and ingredients.
Breakfast has its own rhythm
The municipal food record introduces Xi’an’s meatball hulatang as a local breakfast. Choose a current morning business rather than assuming an illuminated night-street photograph proves late availability.[16]
Rice and dates, not another bread dish
The university heritage page describes zenggao as steamed rice with dates and beans. Showing 甑糕 is useful when the local pronunciation sounds like “jinggao”. Current recipes, additions and portion sizes still need asking.[17]
Ask about the whole preparation
Our suggestion: ask about stock, sauce, oil, filling and garnish. 清真, vegetarian, vegan and a specific allergy are different questions. No kitchen’s religious certification, ingredient list or cross-contact control has been inspected for this guide.
Prepare without overcomplicating
A few precise checks make the trip easier.
Our suggestion: keep the Chinese hotel address, passport used for bookings, confirmed orders and a reachable contact method available. Save only the information you need in a form you can access if a connection is slow.
Make the names do the work
Use 陕西历史博物馆 for the main Shaanxi museum and 西安博物院 for Xi’an Museum; 大雁塔 for the giant pagoda and 小雁塔 for the small one. For the street use 大唐不夜城. Our suggestion: confirm the booked institution and branch in Chinese before paying.
Hotel versus non-hotel accommodation
The September 2026 NIA guidance says hotels register foreign guests; outside a hotel, the guest or host must register within 24 hours. It now offers nationwide online channels, with host assistance required for most first registrations. Follow the current NIA instructions for your own situation.[22]
Have more than one way to pay
Original 2026 reporting describes improved foreign-card, cash-withdrawal and payment-help services. That is useful context, not a successful test of every merchant, overseas wallet or bank. Confirm acceptance before a meal or paid service.[30]
Ask for the actual service you need
Our suggestion: ask venues directly about language, bag storage, guide duration, accessible entry, seating, toilets and restrictions. A general city-service improvement announcement is not an inspected facility or a confirmed booking.
Keep entry permission separate
Check current official entry and visa/transit rules for your nationality, route and documents. This city guide does not determine your eligibility or extend a permission to another part of China.
Make the place more legible
A first look, before the journey.
Watch the setting, then explore the individual guides for their official digital resources and present visitor rules.

Inside the objects and buildings
Use the detailed guides for close-up photographs, object identities and source decisions. A recorded gallery is useful preparation; it does not establish today’s display.
Food and the modern night district
The Sajinqiao guide includes Chinese ordering questions and a rice-cake craft film. The Tang-district guide includes public-art stories and an original CGTN short. These are different kinds of preparation.
Check the actual booking
Go back to the attraction’s current original instructions before purchase. A catalogue, a virtual view and a travel-platform product do not by themselves confirm admission.
Before you ask.
How many days should I plan?
Our suggestion is three full sightseeing days for a selective introduction, four or five for more museums and an unhurried temple visit. Add arrival, departure and intercity travel around them.
Which museum should I choose if I have one slot?
Choose by interest and a confirmed reservation. Shaanxi History Museum offers a provincial archaeological story; Xi’an Museum combines city collections, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda setting and gardens. Their bookings and locations differ.
Can I visit the pits directly by metro?
The museum’s published transport route continues by road beyond Huaqingchi. Do not treat the station as the museum gate.[2]
Is Xi’an East another name for Xi’an North?
No. East opened in June 2026 as a separate station. Use the exact Chinese name on your confirmed rail ticket.[26]
Can I put every famous place into two days?
You would need to choose much more narrowly. Our suggestion: keep one main city interest and the Terracotta outing, then remove the rest openly rather than turning a transport day into a full sightseeing day.
Are the street performances all easy to follow in English?
No English comprehension guarantee is made. Our suggestion: choose movement or music if spoken quizzes do not suit you; check the current programme and watch a short part before waiting longer.
What if I miss a museum reservation?
Follow that museum’s current rules; do not assume another institution or branch is a walk-in substitute. Choose an open public-space outing or a separately confirmed visit while you make the next plan.
Will reading these day plans change my saved itinerary?
No. The city outlines are reading choices. The itinerary builder is a separate tool; it uses its own supported patterns and keeps travel-day boundaries.
Keep the evidence within reach
Where the details come from.
This city guide connects eight independently researched attraction guides and read primary operator, government, national immigration and railway records. Original reporting is identified separately from operator instructions. Forum questions informed the booking, crowd and language FAQs; anecdotes are not used as operating policy. All hotel-area choices, day outlines, time allowances and meal strategies are editorial suggestions. Existing licensed images keep their real subjects, dates and rights. No hotel stay, transport connection, purchase, food tasting or accessible-route inspection has been carried out for this guide.

How dated or conflicting information was handled
The two main museum names and the two pagodas are kept separate throughout. A confirmed booking in one institution is not transferred to the other.
Xi’an Museum’s August 2026 new system gives 18:00 release. We do not borrow Shaanxi History Museum’s 17:00 release or its no-show penalty.[12]
Shaanxi’s dated 2026 extended opening differs from generic seasonal advice. The main museum and Qin–Han branch have different closure exceptions and entry policies; open the detailed current guide before booking.[5][4]
The Bell and Drum towers have different 2026 work periods. Platforms staying open does not mean the exhibition rooms have reopened.[8]
T5 metro station opened before the terminal. The February 2025 opening documents establish the station and terminal, not every airline’s current terminal or tonight’s last train.[24][25]
East station and its Line 5 connection opened in June 2026. Guides that offer only North versus central station omit a present-day distinction.[26][27]
The foreign-card metro report concerns dated counter purchases, not universal gate tapping. Reported payment improvements have not been personally transaction-tested.[23][30]
The National Day tourism loop and old event schedules retain their dates. No expired holiday connection is published as a year-round service.[20]
NIA’s September 2026 national online registration guidance is newer than city-specific old non-hotel registration advice. The legal hotel/non-hotel distinction remains.[22]
What still needs direct confirmation
- Individual museum slot availability, foreign-phone/account success, checkout and actual admission.
