Shanghai · In-depth place guide
北外滩
Another side of the river.
Walk the waterfront, read its port history, and choose one view or story to stay with.
More than a second skyline photograph.
The North Bund is Hongkou’s riverfront: a different position from the classic Bund, with shipping history, public spaces and views across to Lujiazui. Its modern promenades sit within a district that continues to change.[2]
Choose a manageable river section first. Then decide whether to add the high open-air deck, a reserved architectural visit, a bookshop or the Jewish Refugees Museum. Those choices have different addresses, tickets and closing times; they need not all fit into one afternoon.
Plan your visit
Choose one kind of visit.
- Choose it for
- River-level views, port history and one thoughtfully chosen indoor stop.
- Keep the walk flexible
- Follow a shorter public section if weather, energy or crowd directions change.
- Make one decision
- A free outdoor visit or a separately arranged interior; a skyline photograph does not require every tower.
- Plan the return
- Do not make an unconfirmed ferry departure essential to getting home.
A 2026 walking reference, not a live service promise
The October 2026 route ends at Gongping Road Pier, but does not establish current departures or last boarding.[1]
The Grand Halls has a newer visit arrangement
A January 2026 report announces individual visits from 10 January, with bookable periods updated each Friday. The older monthly free-open-day formula should not be used as today’s universal arrangement.[9][10]
A physical 360° view is not an online tour
The Stage is an open-air observation deck. Its panoramic view and the recorded film below are different from an interactive browser panorama.[6]
Seasonal lights have end dates
The September 2026 North Bund light festival was a 17-day programme. Its installations and opening ceremony are not a standing promise for a later visit.[24]
Public riverside, high deck, or museum?
There is no single North Bund ticket covering the promenade, observation deck, museum and river transport. Use each venue’s own information and leave unconfirmed additions optional.
Reviewed 29 October 2026. These are source-reviewed arrangements, not a live availability or weather check.[1][12][7][9][18][13]

The deck FAQ defers refunds to the selling channel; another section gives fixed rules. Confirm the selected product.[7]
Museum concessions have conditions. Foreign-passport identity registration does not automatically establish concession eligibility.[18]
Book the specific place.
The branded deck site links Trip.com products. Choose the actual date, session and age category. No purchase or admission has been tested.[7]
For the Grand Halls, the January 2026 report directs visitors to the official 世界会客厅 WeChat account or mini-program for ticket and reservation details. It also says former public open days will follow the annual Shanghai state-owned-enterprise open-day programme.[9]
Read the museum’s original visit guide. Passport registration is listed; phone processing, payment, any booking account and actual admission remain untested.[18]
Find your bearings
Read the river before adding the detours.
The district estimates about 1½ hours from Line 12 International Cruise Terminal Exit 3 to Gongping Road Pier. This is its October 2026 estimate, not our measured route.[1]
The museum is at 62 Changyang Road, near Tilanqiao Station.[18]
JIC Books: Building 8, 18 Gongping Road.[15]
The Grand Halls, rooftop deck and west-end reading space are separate destinations. Choose an anchor before connecting them.
This guide groups things by interest. It is not a scaled map, a checked continuous accessible route or an assurance that a port office or building interior is open.
Read the public waterfront
Choose a view or a different pace
History in individual lives
Hongkou’s riverside developed as a working port with wharves, warehouses and shipping businesses. The district archive explains the later change from working terminals to public waterfront space.[2]
Russian Jewish residents established the Moshe Synagogue, now a core historic building of the Jewish Refugees Museum.[19]
Jewish refugees escaping Nazi persecution came to Shanghai. Personal records and reconstructed settings help the museum explain their lives.[19]
The museum was established in 2007; a major expansion was completed in December 2020. Older small-museum photographs do not show the whole expanded institution.[19]
A closer reading
What to look for.
Choose the views and stories that interest you. A ship, a borrowed book and a family object tell different parts of the river’s history.
At river level
黄浦江与陆家嘴
Read the opposite bank
The North Bund’s public spaces face the Huangpu River and the Lujiazui skyline. The district describes the riverfront as a place where commercial buildings, public green space and the city’s shipping identity meet.[3]
Start with one recognisable tower across the water, then look lower: boats, embankments, planted areas and the edge you are standing on. A photograph becomes more interesting when it shows the relationship between the city and its river, not only the tallest building.
Our looking suggestionCompare a broad view with one carefully framed landmark.
Shipping history
码头与城市变迁
A port before it was a picture
The district archive traces the North Bund’s modern shore to successive wharves and port businesses. It distinguishes the later International Cruise Terminal development from the former Yangtze River Wharf area that became the Grand Halls.[2]
A 2002 passenger-ship photograph makes that working past tangible. It does not advertise a current sailing. Likewise, the public promenade is not an invitation to enter secure terminal or yacht areas.[3]
The Huishan Wharf marker recalls departures for work-study in France in 1919–20. The district archive distinguishes departures from different wharves; we do not assign every overseas student to this one point.[2]
Our looking suggestionLook for the scale of the old waterfront within the newer buildings.
Riverside green space
小巨蛋
A mirrored surface, a changing picture
The district’s 2026 visitor introduction identifies the silver egg-shaped structure in the cruise-terminal riverside green space. Its appeal comes from both the mirror surface and its relationship to the skyline.[5]
Walk around the public side at your own pace. Watch how the reflection changes with a small change in position, then choose a picture without climbing planting beds or taking over the path. Our photograph records November 2025, not an empty scene guaranteed today.
Our looking suggestionNotice the reflection of the bank you are on as well as the towers across the river.
Outdoor interpretation
北外滩航海公园
A maritime story under your feet
A 2023 district account describes the Maritime Park at 500 Dongdaming Road, with a 77-metre shipping-history axis and 26 marked moments. This is an outdoor interpretive landscape, not a single indoor museum ticket.[4]
Use a short part of the chronology to connect the port’s working history with the present leisure space. The exact condition of panels, lighting and every current path has not been inspected.
Our looking suggestionFind one date that connects a maritime development with an ordinary traveller’s journey.
A different frame
音乐之门
Look through the Gate of Music
The district identifies the Gate of Music with the suspended rounded forms of a Will Alsop-designed structure at 638 Dongdaming Road. Its lighting and bold shapes are a deliberate modern layer in the port setting.[4]
Our September 2022 photograph frames Lujiazui through the structure. Compare this enclosed view with the open riverside. The image does not establish access to a private interior, a performance or a particular light sequence.
Our looking suggestionUse the forms as a frame rather than expecting a scheduled music show.
501 Dongdaming Road
The Stage 白玉兰观景台
A high view is a separate choice
The Stage opened to the public on 15 April 2025. The municipal film introduces its 320-metre open-air setting above Sinar Mas Plaza and the views towards the Bund and Lujiazui.[6]
A high deck changes the scale of the river. Before booking, decide whether you want daylight detail or an evening cityscape, check the actual admission window and consider weather and visibility. The public riverfront remains a different experience.
The ticket page advertises starting amounts, not a single adult tariff. Confirm the selected product’s refund conditions.[7]
Our looking suggestionThe building exterior in these dated photographs is not a photograph taken on the deck.
Grand Halls
世界会客厅
A warehouse setting, an arranged interior
The January 2026 report describes individual visits with architectural, historical and art interpretation. It notes that Buildings 2 and 3 retain their overall historical appearance, while the complex now serves major meetings and cultural uses.[9]
That makes an arranged interior visit potentially interesting, but the riverfront and the indoor halls are different kinds of access. Check the actual date, included rooms, language and product. Do not arrive expecting the former 2024 monthly free-open-day arrangement to apply automatically.[10]
Our looking suggestionTreat the history, present use and chosen tour as three separate parts of the visit.
A separately arranged venue
数字北外滩展示馆
A city model is a proposal, not a completed skyline
The 2024 trial-opening report describes the Digital North Bund Exhibition Hall at 668 Dongdaming Road. It used a physical model, screens and an immersive theatre to explain the area’s development. Model colours distinguished completed buildings from projects under construction or planning.[11]
The old trial slots are not a current reservation promise. Use the venue’s color北外滩 account for a fresh check. Its “naked-eye 3D” theatre is a physical exhibition format, not a browser panorama.[11]
Our looking suggestionDistinguish a project rendering, a construction site and a building that actually admits visitors.
Waterfront spaces
港池与游艇
A harbour is not a boarding pass
The municipal introduction describes inner yacht harbours in the separate waterfront complex between Gongping Road and Qinhuangdao Road. Its English title says “National Aviation Center”, but the described features are a shipping and yacht setting, not an aviation museum.[12]
The listing gives 100 Yangshupu Road, free public admission and 06:00–22:00, updated February 2025. It does not establish access to individual vessels, berths, private terraces or a yacht rental.[12]
Our looking suggestionLook at how a sheltered basin relates to the working river; enter only currently signed public space.
Separate public transport
公平路轮渡站
A short crossing, if it fits the day
The October route suggests the Taigong ferry from Gongping Road Pier. The pedestrian fare reference is CNY 2.[1][13]
A dated 2021 Shanghai Release route collection locates the Gongping terminal at 1 Gongping Road and its opposite-bank terminal at 1 Pudong South Road. We have not verified a present timetable or last boarding. Check the terminal before relying on a crossing.[14]
Our looking suggestionRead the route name and destination at the actual terminal; keep a different return option.
18 Gongping Road, Building 8
建投书局·浦江店
Make a reading stop, not only a photo stop
JIC Books focuses on biography and autobiography. The municipal introduction identifies its main hall and tall windows facing the Huangpu River. Its address is Building 8, 18 Gongping Road.[15]
The April 2026 reading guide points out how the shop arranges cultural stories around people’s lives. Let that be a reason to browse, rather than using it solely as a photo backdrop. Current opening, seating, café spending and event arrangements need a direct check.[16]
Our looking suggestionChoose a life story or a subject that makes the surrounding city more legible.
An optional west-end extension
虹书舫
A book-filled “vessel” that does not sail
The April 2026 city guide describes Hoshu Superyacht as a new reading space near Waibaidu Bridge. Despite the translated name, it is not a vessel offering a river voyage. Its focus is world literary classics.[16]
A September 2026 district itinerary gives 111 North Suzhou Road. The event itinerary itself has expired; the address is a useful lead, not a promise of a particular programme, table or opening hour.[17]
Our looking suggestionChoose it as a separate west-end destination, not a stop already included in the short eastward river walk.
62 Changyang Road
摩西会堂
Begin the museum with its historic building
The Jewish Refugees Museum was established around the Moshe Synagogue. The institution dates the synagogue to 1927 and describes its later role as a gathering and religious place for refugees. Restoration in 2007 and the larger museum expansion are part of its subsequent history.[19]
This is a distinct historical interior, not another skyline viewpoint. Follow signs restricting photography and video in particular spaces.[18]
Our looking suggestionRead the building’s own label and distinguish later interpretation from original fabric.
Individuals, not just a total
犹太难民名单墙
A name wall that continues to grow
The dedicated museum page records successive versions of the Wall of Names: 13,732 in 2014, 18,578 after the 2020 expansion, and 19,672 following an addition unveiled on 21 October 2025. The general introduction still repeats the older number.[20]
The difference is a documented update, not a reason to silently choose the largest number. A name list also has its own scope and cannot be treated as a complete count of everyone who passed through Shanghai.
The permanent exhibition includes flight, daily life, the restricted-area experience, departure and later connections. These are different parts of the story; do not reduce the wartime experience to an uncomplicated refuge narrative.[21]
Our looking suggestionLook for an individual story, its date and the kind of record behind it.
Choose a story to read
个人物品与家庭记忆
Follow a suitcase and a wedding dress
The museum’s collection account identifies Otto Julius Pinkus’s suitcase by his initials. It accompanied his flight from Germany to Shanghai and later life in Australia; his family donated it in 2019. A small travelling object connects multiple stages of one family’s history.[22]
The separate wedding-dress record describes Betty Grebenschikoff’s dress, made by her mother-in-law and later worn by her daughters. Its donation in 2013 makes it a family object with a history beyond one ceremony.[23]
The original online records have photographs and more detail. Collection membership does not guarantee a particular object is displayed when you arrive; read a current label or ask the museum.
Our looking suggestionConsider what the owner kept, what survived a journey and what the donor chose to preserve.
67 Changyang Road
白马咖啡馆
A café building with a reconstruction story
The museum’s own history describes the White Horse Inn as opened in 1939 by refugees from Vienna. The original was demolished during road widening in 2009; the building at 67 Changyang Road was reconstructed in 2015, retaining some earlier components and furniture.[19]
That distinction matters: the historical business, reconstructed building and any present food service are not identical claims. We have not verified current menus, opening hours or admission arrangements, so no meal is built into this stop.
Our looking suggestionCompare the account with the building label; do not describe the whole structure as untouched 1939 fabric.
A flexible finish
傍晚与夜景
Leave room for the river to change
The district’s summer 2026 introduction describes the egg, Gate of Music and reading spaces as different evening possibilities. A September light festival added a temporary programme; it has ended.[5][24]
Choose a place to pause while daylight shifts, rather than chasing a claimed nightly show. Sunset colour, visibility, crowds and lighting vary. If you want an evening crossing, check the real ferry conditions before making it the only way back. Photo dates below remain part of their meaning.
Our looking suggestionEnjoy one changing view; a quieter alternative is a choice, not a crowd guarantee.
Choose what matters
Make the visit yours.
For a first look without a paid interior.
One stretch, a mirror, and a pause
- Keep
- A manageable public river section and one architectural frame.
- The trade-off
- You will leave the museum and rooftop for another visit.
Choose a signed approach
Use the station and public entrance that suit your intended section.
Read the river
Take a broad look before focusing on one skyline landmark.
Choose a public artwork
Spend time with the mirror or the Gate of Music, without blocking the path.
Finish deliberately
Stop at a confirmed open rest space or return by a route you have checked.
Our outline is not a measured or on-site-tested route. Temporary path controls, weather and steps may change the choice.
All outlines are editorial estimates, not field-tested routes. Follow current admission rules and venue directions.
Arrival, energy and interpretation
Get the details right.
One riverfront, several useful addresses.
The October route starts at Line 12 International Cruise Terminal, Exit 3.[1]
The Stage: LG1, Sinar Mas Plaza, 501 Dongdaming Road.[7]
For the museum, save 上海犹太难民纪念馆,长阳路62号 and use Tilanqiao Station.[18]
For JIC Books, save 公平路18号8号楼.[15]
The actual lift condition, curb crossings, complete step-free path and every current entrance have not been physically inspected. Ask station and venue staff about the exact route you need.
With children, luggage or a mobility need
The deck FAQ prohibits strollers and large luggage and mentions storage. Capacity, price and complete accessibility remain untested.[7]
The museum lists free storage and ID-registered wheelchair borrowing. Availability and complete accessibility remain untested.[18]
A bookshop or café as a pause
Choose by today’s menu, seating and opening conditions. A historic business photograph or river-view description does not confirm a table, air conditioning, a toilet, a quiet room or acceptance of a particular card.
The 2026 district feature mentions commercial coffee and reading spaces. They remain optional, and our guide does not endorse the taste, price or service of an untested business.[5]
A plan is not a newly opened attraction
The October 2026 district development report describes major projects under construction. A tower rendering, a planning model or a construction milestone does not establish an open observation deck or public interior.[25]

Original online records
Start with an object, not an invented virtual tour.
The museum’s own illustrated collection pages offer a useful way to prepare for a historical visit. They are object records, not a claim that every room has been virtually toured.

The original account follows a named family object through Germany, Shanghai and Australia. It can help you choose a story before visiting, without implying current physical display.[22]

Before you ask.
Is this the same walk as the classic Bund?
No. It is a different Hongkou waterfront and viewpoint. Choose the perspective and historical interests you want, then plan any connection separately.[2]
Is the entire waterfront open 24 hours?
We have not established one all-area timetable. The municipal listing for the specific complex at 100 Yangshupu Road gives 06:00–22:00, while other venues have their own rules.[12]
Can I rely on a night ferry?
No current departures or last boarding were verified. Check the terminal and keep another return option.[1]
Is the old free Grand Halls day still the booking rule?
Use the January 2026 individual-visit announcement and current official booking information. The 2024 monthly formula is historical.[9][10]
Does a “from CNY 110” deck ticket mean the adult price?
No. Check the dated product, age category, session and final terms.[7]
Which museum name-wall number is current in the sources?
The dedicated page records 19,672 following the 21 October 2025 addition; the general introduction retains an earlier total. Treat the numbers as dated versions.[20]
Dates, sources and photographs
Follow the evidence.
Read current venue information, detailed collection records, district archives, dated municipal routes and original reporting. Community threads informed questions about crowds and evening ferries; they do not establish timetables or representative demand. Visit outlines are editorial, not measured routes. Dated genuine photographs cannot confirm current display, lighting, openings or transport.

How conflicting descriptions were handled
Use the 2026 individual-visit arrangement. The October development report’s reused first-open-day language does not establish free daily entry.[9][10][25]
The dedicated name-wall page gives a dated 2025 addition beyond the older number in the museum overview. We retain the dated progression rather than treating both pages as equally current totals.[20][19]
The 2021 endpoints are historical background. The newer suggested ferry ride still does not establish a current timetable.[14][1]
Different refund descriptions and old event listings prevent treating the deck website as one unconditional admission promise.[7]
The municipal “National Aviation Center” page describes yacht harbours and a riverfront complex. We use the described address and scope, and do not advertise it as an aviation museum.[12]
What still needs direct confirmation
- Actual foreign-document bookings, overseas phone support, payment, concessions and admission have not been tested.
- The precise current ferry timetable, final departures, last boarding, terminal disruptions and onboard accessibility remain unconfirmed.
- Grand Halls current fee, dates, rooms, guide language and free-open-day programme require direct confirmation.
- The Stage selected adult tariff, package conditions, refunds, weather closure and complete accessibility need a booking-specific check.
- No complete North Bund browser panorama has been verified. On-site planning-theatre operation and headset experiences have not been tested.
- Commercial seating, menus, toilets, lift operation, physical routes and current museum object displays have not been verified on site.
Film verification: The original visible video advanced beyond 3 seconds; duration 54.845533 seconds, 1080 × 1920 pixels. A skyline frame after seeking to 20 seconds was inspected. The local on-request player advanced beyond 2 seconds at desktop and mobile viewport sizes. Complete caption coverage, every region and physical-phone playback remain untested.
