Shanghai · In-depth place guide
外滩
Read Shanghai from the river.
Grand facades, working water and a skyline on the other bank.
Look across the Huangpu. Then turn around and read the buildings behind you.
The Bund occupies the Puxi bank of the Huangpu River, facing Pudong’s towers. Its familiar waterfront is also a line of former banks, hotels and trading institutions. The municipal guide describes a roughly 1.5-kilometre historic waterfront; the wider protected district and today’s southern extensions cover more than one short promenade.[2][1]
Our suggestion: choose a few facades, one stretch of river and enough time to stop. A satisfying visit can be a daylight architecture walk, an evening view, or a planned crossing to see the historic row from Pudong. Buying a cruise, booking an interior and walking the promenade are separate choices.
Plan your visit
Before you go.
- Time to allow
- Our suggestion: 1½–3 hours for a selective walk and river views; longer for booked interiors, a crossing or a meal.
- Choose the right bank
- On the Bund you face Pudong’s towers. From Pudong you can look back at the historic Bund frontage.
- What to book
- The public waterfront walk is separate from bank visits, hotel tours, cruises, rooftop venues and the sightseeing tunnel.
- Most useful preparation
- Read the actual Chinese building or pier name. Confirm the date on a lighting, ferry or special-opening notice.
Signal Tower: a recent reopening supersedes an older closed listing
The October 2026 municipal update reports reopening and 10:00–22:00 hours. Original reporting identifies on-site reservation for the limited second-floor space. Confirm the current arrangement on arrival.[18][19]
An evening ferry needs its own check
Dongjin is a daytime pedestrian crossing. Dongfu uses a different Puxi pier. Its seasonal extension has a specific end date; check the line-specific notes below before planning a night return.[22]
A public walk and separate experiences
The public waterfront is a city walk rather than one enclosed museum ticket. Individual interiors and commercial products have their own admission, reservation and purchase conditions. Use the exact provider and product, not just an English listing called “The Bund”.[1]
Separate public-space access, an interior booking and a river product. Current availability and transactions have not been tested.[1]
Public promenade
- Published arrangement
- A public-space walking visit.
- The useful distinction
- Follow current crowd and weather controls. No general ticket for entering the street is identified in the municipal place guide.
Former HSBC / SPD Bank interior
- Published arrangement
- June 2026 notice: weekday 11:30–12:00 or 12:00–12:30; advance registration via 遇见浦发 or 浦发银行 WeChat channels.
- The useful distinction
- Published sessions are not a successful booking. Foreign-document fields, phone requirements, language and available spaces remain untested.
Fairmont Peace Museum / guided heritage visit
- Published arrangement
- Museum hours listed by the hotel: 09:00–19:00.
- The useful distinction
- Complimentary guided visits: registered hotel guests, by reservation. Non-residents: confirm the applicable package at least a day ahead.
Signal Tower public spaces
- Published arrangement
- October 2026 municipal listing: 10:00–22:00.
- The useful distinction
- Original reporting says the second floor needs on-site reservation. Current capacity, cafe charges and accessibility require a direct check.
Public ferry
- Published arrangement
- June 2026 municipal pedestrian reference: CNY 2 per crossing.
- The useful distinction
- Confirm the actual line, pier and day’s operation. It is transport across the river; a sightseeing cruise is a separate product.
Cruise, rooftop or tunnel
- Published arrangement
- Separate operator and product.
- The useful distinction
- Check the exact departure point/venue, route, date, duration, inclusions, language, document requirements and cancellation before paying.

The published bank programme names the octagonal hall, coffered hall and scissors staircase. That is a reserved visit, not a promise that every passer-by may explore an operating bank.[4]
The Peace Hotel’s current page separates complimentary hotel-guest tours, an enhanced hotel-guest tour and packages for non-residents. A generic “free hotel tour” description loses this condition.[9]
Temporary crowd controls can apply to the public waterfront. Our suggestion: choose an alternative open public-space walk if the actual approach is restricted, rather than treating a map pin as an entitlement to enter.
Choose what you actually want to enter
For an interior, use the current venue instructions and keep the successful confirmation. For a river trip, check the Chinese pier name and which bank it is on. A ticketing app’s city pin is not a boarding point.
The 2025 Customs House opening was an art-season event described as lasting two months before major repair work. That announcement does not establish ordinary tourist entry today. Current interior access and repair status remain unconfirmed.[6]
Find your bearings
One river, two readings of the city.
The Bund’s historic frontage stands on the west side of the Huangpu. Our suggestion: choose the bank for the view you want, then plan the actual crossing and return.[2]
The groups below are an editorial reading order. They are not a surveyed route, an accessible-route map, current crossing instructions or a promise that a particular building interior is open.
Read the river
Choose the facades
Go beyond the skyline
The archive’s bridge account places the waterfront’s growth in the period after Shanghai opened as a treaty port in 1843. Its foreign-designed infrastructure also relied on Chinese contractors and workers.[12]
A closer reading
What to look for.
Fourteen ways to make sense of a selective walk. Enter only the spaces your actual reservation or on-site instructions allow.
The essential orientation
黄浦江 · 浦西与浦东
Turn towards both banks
The water divides Puxi and Pudong. A riverbank photograph can show either the historic facades or the towers opposite; the photographer’s position matters as much as the skyline.[2]
Our suggestion: first look across the river, then turn towards the older buildings. For a reverse view of the Bund, plan a separate crossing and the return instead of assuming the waterfront itself takes you to the other bank.
Our looking suggestionSeparate the place you stand from the place your camera sees.
A grand facade
原汇丰银行大楼 · 外滩12号
A dome built for banking
The 1923 building was designed by Palmer & Turner’s George Wilson and is now associated with SPD Bank. Its broad, ordered front and central dome made architecture part of a bank’s public message of permanence.[3]
Our suggestion: compare the heavy lower facade, tall middle columns and lighter dome. These are useful things to look at without turning every classical building on the street into the same style.
Our looking suggestionLook at how the dome and columned centre balance the long frontage.
An interior to reserve
八角厅马赛克
A city pictured above a banking hall
The architectural account identifies eight city panels in the octagonal entrance hall. In the panel labelled SHANGHAI, the background includes the bank and the earlier Customs House: it should not be read as a photograph of today’s riverfront. The mosaics were rediscovered during 1997 restoration.[3]
The municipal June 2026 programme requires advance registration for named interior spaces. Our suggestion: book only if the time, language and actual document process work for you. An archival interior photograph is not permission to enter.[4]
Our looking suggestionFind the city name on a panel and compare its represented skyline with the buildings outside.
An administrative landmark
江海关大楼 · 外滩13号
The clock tower beside the dome
The present Customs House opened on 19 December 1927. The construction authority’s feature describes a simplified Neoclassical facade, a four-sided clock tower and a working administrative building behind the landmark exterior.[5]
Our suggestion: compare its vertical tower with the neighbouring bank’s rounded dome. Listen if a bell sounds, but do not build a day around an unverified chime performance or a climb into the clock mechanism.
Our looking suggestionLook for the clock faces and the strong central axis; a clock tower is not a public observation deck.
A different kind of institution
原上海总会 · 外滩2号
A former club with a changing life
The hotel operator’s history associates the Shanghai Club with 1911 and identifies the address as today’s Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund. The preserved-looking frontage and hospitality spaces belong to a building whose uses have changed.[7]
Our suggestion: read this as social history as well as an ornate facade. If you want a meal or drink inside, confirm current access, opening and price with the actual hotel venue. The old KFC photograph below is a dated reuse story, not a present recommendation.
Our looking suggestionCompare the older commercial signage in the archival photograph with the building’s architectural form.
Swatch Art Peace Hotel
原汇中饭店 · 外滩19号
The south hotel has its own history
The owner’s history explains the 1906 date above the door as the date of the architect’s plans. Following a 1907 fire, the new Palace Hotel opened in 1908. It later became the Peace Hotel South Building and is now the Swatch Art Peace Hotel.[8]
Our suggestion: keep this building separate from the Fairmont Peace Hotel across Nanjing East Road. A name shared in an older guide does not make their entrances, collections, residency spaces or visitor arrangements interchangeable.
Our looking suggestionA year carved on a facade can refer to plans rather than the opening date.
Fairmont Peace Hotel
沙逊大厦 · 外滩20号
The former Cathay Hotel
The hotel’s own museum traces the former Cathay Hotel from 1929. Its current heritage programmes are described on a separate visitor page, with reservation and guest-status conditions.[9]
Our suggestion: enjoy the recognisable roof and facade from public space, then make an interior visit a deliberate choice. A general invitation to admire the building is not a guarantee of a complimentary guided tour.
Our looking suggestionKeep the north building’s skyline shape distinct from the lower former Palace Hotel.
A project with several dates
中国银行大楼 · 外滩23号
Chinese design within the waterfront row
Reporting on the planning authority’s archival study identifies Lu Qianshou working with Palmer & Turner and describes the building’s Chinese design elements. The bank-hosted historical account places the main structural work around 1937 and the bank’s move into the building in 1946; the later archival account dates completion to 1944.[10][11]
Our suggestion: look for the relationship between the vertical modern facade and Chinese decorative elements. Keep design, structural completion, wartime finishing and occupation separate instead of forcing them into one “built in” year.
Our looking suggestionRead the building as a Chinese institution’s own project, not an anonymous member of an entirely foreign-designed row.
The northern river junction
外白渡桥
Steel above Suzhou Creek
The Shanghai Archives account dates the present steel bridge’s completion to late 1907. It describes overseas steel manufacture and the substantial role of Chinese contractors in foundations, erection and decking. The bridge spans Suzhou Creek, not the Huangpu.[12]
Our suggestion: take in the truss rhythm from the designated footway while keeping the path clear. Crossing this bridge takes you across the creek; it is not the crossing to Pudong.
Our looking suggestionFollow the repeating steel members and the pedestrian route within the bridge structure.
History beyond the facades
黄浦公园
Public space with an unequal past
The district’s archival account describes the park’s former exclusion of Chinese visitors, apart from specified servants, and its opening to Chinese people in 1928. The waterfront’s history includes restrictions and unequal power as well as architectural ambition.[13]
Our suggestion: read the site’s history before treating every restored-looking corner as uncomplicated nostalgia. This guide does not reproduce a supposed single slogan-sign as if its exact wording had been verified.
Our looking suggestionConsider who could use the public-looking space at different times in its history.
Huangpu Park’s memorial setting
上海市人民英雄纪念塔
A later chapter at the river junction
The university cultural-resource record dates the memorial’s public opening to 1994. Its three rising elements and associated reliefs commemorate people who died in Shanghai’s revolutionary struggles. It is a later commemorative intervention in the historic waterfront.[14]
Our suggestion: look at the vertical forms and the surrounding reliefs as a designed memorial, then return to the broader river view. Current entry to any indoor historical display is a separate question.
Our looking suggestionRead the memorial title and give commemorative spaces the attention and room they ask for.
A recently reopened small building
外滩信号台
Time and weather for the working river
The signal service began in 1884; original recent reporting distinguishes that early installation from the 1907–08 tower project. Its balls and flags supplied time and weather information to shipping before later communications made the original role obsolete.[19]
The October 2026 municipal update lists 10:00–22:00 opening, tourist information/history on the first floor and a cafe above. Recent reporting says the second floor needs an on-site reservation. Our suggestion: ask about the actual space you want; the public opening does not imply access to every level.[18][19]
Our looking suggestionThink of this as a practical maritime instrument given a new public role, rather than a decorative lighthouse.
An evening choice
外滩景观照明
Illumination is different from a scheduled show
The lighting authority’s 2023 response gives 19:00–23:00 for May–September and 18:00–22:00 for October–April. These are published standard reference hours; current operational changes can override them.[20]
The 2026 National Day notice extended selected lighting and explicitly said there was no cross-district coordinated light show at the Bund/North Bund/Lujiazui. Its 30 September–7 October hours have ended. Do not convert a summer “light-up moment” report into a year-round performance timetable.[21]
Our looking suggestionCompare the illuminated architectural outlines with what daylight shows; the picture is not a promise of tonight’s effect.
A river journey to choose
东金线 · 东复线
Two piers are two different plans
The municipal guide places Dongjin between Jinling East Road and Dongchang Road, as a daytime pedestrian crossing. Dongfu also uses Dongchang Road, but its Puxi pier is Fuxing East Road. They are different boarding points.[22]
Our suggestion: use a public ferry when crossing is the purpose, or choose a sightseeing cruise deliberately if you want its longer itinerary. Confirm boarding, final departures and the way back before leaving one bank.
Our looking suggestionRead 金陵东路 and 复兴东路 carefully; “East Road ferry” is not a sufficient destination.
Choose what matters
Make the visit yours.
Our suggestion: 1½–3 flexible hours
Three facades and a view
- Keep
- Enough attention for a few buildings and the river
- The trade-off
- A selective visit, without every interior or crossing
Choose the view first
Start on the actual open Puxi approach if you want the Pudong skyline.
Read the dome and clock
Compare former HSBC and Customs House from an appropriate public viewpoint.
Choose a second architectural story
Continue towards the two Peace Hotel buildings or another facade that interests you.
Pause at the river, then leave by the practical route
Check current station directions and crowd flow.
This is an editorial outline, not a measured or inspected route. Use marked crossings and current access instructions.
All outlines are editorial estimates, not field-tested routes. Follow current admission rules and venue directions.
Arrival, energy and interpretation
Get the details right.
Arrive on the bank you mean
Nanjing East Road / 南京东路 is an interchange of metro Lines 2 and 10 in the municipal renewal plan. Use current station signs for the actual exit and onward walk; no fixed exit, last-train or walking-minute guarantee is made.[27]
For a driver, show the exact building, street corner or pier. 外滩 by itself covers too many possible meeting points. Zhongshan East No. 1 and No. 2 Road addresses and the two sides of Nanjing East Road should be checked carefully.
The municipal guide lists 金陵东路渡口 at 中山东二路141号 and 东昌路渡口 at 滨江大道3510号. Fuxing East Road is a different Puxi pier. Use the full pier name.[22]
A daylight visit and an evening visit
Our suggestion: choose daylight for surface detail and easier name-reading; choose an evening for illuminated silhouettes. If you want both, include a real break rather than assuming the walk must continue without rest.
Current light reference and special events
The published standard lighting reference is distinct from an event, countdown or coordinated show. Check the actual date and operational announcement. A film or panorama supplies atmosphere, not a live lighting report.
Public ferry: price and the important time limit
The June 2026 municipal transport guide lists CNY 2 for a pedestrian ferry crossing. It does not make every ticket product in the riverfront area a two-yuan ride.[23]
For Dongjin, the municipal boat guide lists service until 18:30 from Jinling East Road and 18:15 from Dongchang Road. Check current pier/operator directions and do not plan it as a late-night crossing.[22]
Dongfu’s notice extends service end to 22:00 only 1 May–31 October 2026. Check the coming winter operation; that seasonal end time is not a final-boarding promise from each pier.[24]
A sightseeing cruise is a different product
Our suggestion: check the actual cruise name, pier, date, duration, route, cabin/deck, inclusions and refund conditions. A public ferry is not a continuous river tour. This guide has not purchased or boarded a cruise.
Rest, information and interior rules
The Signal Tower offers information/history spaces, with limited second-floor entry. Ask locally about capacity, cafe purchases and facilities.[18][19]
Weather, mobility and photographs
No complete step-free walk, accessible crossing, ferry ramp, toilet provision or private terrace has been inspected. Our suggestion: select a short enough outing to change plans, follow current weather/crowd instructions and keep photograph stops clear of the walking flow.

Before you ask.
Which side gives the famous Pudong skyline?
The Bund is on Puxi’s bank. Across the river are Pudong’s towers. For the historic Bund frontage as a subject, plan a view from the other bank or an intentionally chosen river product.[2]
Is there a mandatory ticket for the waterfront walk?
The public-space walk is separate from a paid tour, cruise, tunnel or private venue. If somebody sells a “Bund ticket”, verify exactly which service and provider it covers.
Can anyone take the free Peace Hotel heritage tour?
The complimentary guided tour is for registered hotel guests, reserved subject to availability. Non-residents need the venue’s applicable package.[9]
Is the Signal Tower still closed?
The October 2026 municipal update reports reopening. Check current on-site arrangements for the actual space you want to enter.[18]
Can I use Dongjin after a night walk?
Choose your return from the current line-specific operator information. Do not leave a daytime crossing as the fallback for an unplanned late evening.
Is there a light show every evening?
Published architectural illumination is distinct from a separately announced show. The 2026 National Day notice explicitly ruled out a cross-district coordinated show at the principal riverfront areas. Do not expect a daily performance without a current notice.[21]
Does the 360 view show the whole walk?
It is one stitched 2018 camera viewpoint that you can turn through. It is preparation for understanding the space, not a navigable multi-location tour or live view.
Can I enter Customs House using the 2025 art-season announcement?
That notice described a two-month event before major repair work. It does not establish today’s ordinary visitor admission or reservation.[6]
Dates, sources and photographs
Follow the evidence.
The guide uses read municipal/heritage records, original architectural/archival reporting, property operators and dated ferry/lighting notices. Building exteriors, booked interiors and commercial river products are kept separate. Forum questions shaped the two-bank, crowd, ferry and hotel-tour FAQs; anecdotes do not establish policy. All time allowances and walking outlines are editorial suggestions. Genuine photo subjects and dates are retained; the panorama is a CC0 photograph, not generated scenery. No bank/hotel booking, ferry/cruise boarding, complete accessible route or on-site operation has been inspected.

How conflicting descriptions were handled
A roughly 1.5-kilometre historic frontage, the wider protected district, 52 listed buildings and a 115-building reading initiative are different scopes. We do not treat them as the same inventory or assign one style to every facade.[2][1]
The Swatch building’s 1906 inscription refers to plans; the owner dates its opening to 1908. It is distinct from the 1929 former Cathay Hotel across the road.[8][9]
Bank of China’s main structure around 1937, archival completion in 1944 and occupation in 1946 are different milestones. Neither the floor count nor a single “built in 1937” label is used to erase that sequence.[10][11]
The Signal Tower’s older closed listing is superseded by the October 2026 reopening. The original report distinguishes the 1884 signal service from the 1907–08 current tower and identifies the limited second-floor reservation.[17][18][19]
A municipal English memorial description uses 1993, while the university and district accounts date public opening to 1994. We label the opening rather than silently choosing one construction-year claim.[16][14][15]
The 2023 standard light response is a reference; the September/October 2026 extension has expired. Summer social-media excitement is not a permanent nightly show.[20][21]
Expired National Day ferry controls and the dated Dongfu seasonal extension are not permanent timetables. Check the applicable date and route.[24][25]
The Customs House notice covers a dated event. Bank visits and Peace Hotel tours retain their specific reservation and guest-status conditions.[6][4][9]
The 360 view is a single 2018 stitched photograph. The separately linked CGTN short is ordinary video. Neither is a live camera or today’s crowd, lighting or accessibility report.[28][26]
What still needs direct confirmation
- Successful overseas-document/phone booking, English interpretation and current slots for each interior.
- Current Customs House repair/entry status, all Signal Tower space/cafe terms and private venue access.
- Tonight’s actual lighting, short-notice controls, weather interruptions and ferry’s final boarding from each pier.
- A full step-free route, accessible toilets, lifts, seating, cruise/ferry boarding and real-phone 360 operation.
- Current cruise, rooftop, hotel package, guide and sightseeing-tunnel purchase conditions.
Film verification: Original CGTN page/data-video and visible overlay checked. Visible player advanced beyond 3 seconds; duration 43.666666 seconds. Frame shows a visitor and the Pudong skyline from the riverfront. It is data-is 360=false ordinary video; no rehosting, current scene or English subtitle guarantee.
