China in Reach · In-depth city guide
上海
Shanghai
A riverfront city with quieter streets, deep collections and room for a garden day.
Plan a week in ShanghaiChoose three, five or seven full sightseeing days. Add arrival, departure and intercity travel separately.
Shanghai Museum East and the People’s Square venue have different programmes, gates and closing days.
PVG is Pudong; SHA is Hongqiao. An airport terminal and Hongqiao Railway Station are different destinations.
Compare the actual hotel entrance, station exit and room, not only the district name or a “river view” label.
Shanghai rewards a change of scale. Read a whole skyline from the river, then a carved doorway, a bronze vessel or a shaded street. A tower, a museum day, a water-town outing and an unhurried meal ask for different amounts of time and attention.
This guide connects twelve in-depth place guides. Use it to choose a base, protect the journeys and make a few good decisions before buying. The place guides hold the individual objects, buildings, photographs and detailed visitor evidence. Our proposed days are editorial outlines, not confirmed admissions.
Read the city
Start with one side of the river.
Use the river as an orientation tool, then choose a small number of anchors. Crossing it can be easy, but a place name on the same bank does not establish a short walk. Leave room for station approaches, road crossings and the path from a gate to the thing you came to see.
The Bund, old-city garden and smaller streets
Our suggestion: give the historic riverfront and Yu Garden their own attention, then choose a separate neighbourhood outing around Wukang Road, Anfu Road, Jing’an or Xintiandi. A garden interior, public street and memorial building are different visits.
Collections and the view from above
For regular Shanghai Museum collections, choose the East branch in Pudong. The People’s Square venue has a separate Americas exhibition programme through 14 November 2027; it is not a closed building or an interchangeable collection visit.[16]
Our suggestion: treat a museum visit as the day’s anchor. Add Shanghai Tower only if your interest, weather and energy make it worthwhile. “Both in Pudong” is not a measured connection time.
Three riverfront names, different outings
The Bund, North Bund and West Bund are different settings. Choose the historic frontage, a northern river-and-refugee-history visit or a southern art-museum day. There is no need to complete all three promenades simply because they share “Bund” in English.
A garden or water town deserves its own day
Nanxiang and Zhujiajiao are separate out-of-centre choices. Our suggestion is to choose one first: bamboo garden and brick towers, or canal streets and bridges. A second town is optional, not a necessary upgrade to the trip.
Choose what interests you
Twelve ways into Shanghai.
Each place below has a full in-depth guide. Time allowances are editorial starting points; the attraction’s own access and current conditions decide the visit.
01 · An unhurried riverfront outing
外滩
The Bund
Historic facades and a skyline across the water
Read one building closely, then give the river view room. The detailed guide distinguishes bank interiors, hotel spaces, bridges and public memorials.
The choiceAn exterior walk and entry into a particular building are different choices.

豫园
Yu Garden
Rocks, water, framing and an enclosed landscape
Choose a few spaces inside the garden rather than treating it as another shopping-lane photograph. Check the daytime gate and the current Monday arrangement.
The choiceThe paid garden, surrounding shopping lanes and night-tour products are different visits.

上海博物馆东馆
Shanghai Museum East
Objects and collections, one thread at a time
Choose bronzes, ceramics, jade, writing or another collection thread. General individual entry and specially reserved interactive spaces have different arrangements.
The choiceEast is in Pudong; People’s Square has a different exhibition programme.

武康路 · 安福路
Wukang Road & Anfu Road
Buildings, doorways, a meal and everyday street life
Use the detailed guide for individual facades and optional cultural stops. Leave a café as a possibility rather than making every block a business appointment.
The choiceResidents, private interiors and individual venues have their own boundaries.

M50创意园
M50 Creative Park
Reused industrial spaces and individual art programmes
Pick a gallery or current programme, then explore the courtyards. The detailed guide distinguishes institutional names, former tenants and dated exhibitions.
The choiceThe park address does not give every gallery the same opening day.

新天地
Xintiandi
Reworked shikumen streets and separate historic sites
Read how the lanes were reused, then decide whether a specific historic interior matters to you. Follow the actual venue’s current admission process.
The choiceA former museum building, brand space, memorial and school site are not one ticket.
Read the in-depth guide07 · A riverfront with optional museum time
北外滩
North Bund
A different skyline angle and refugee-history stories
Choose the river, a museum thread or a named indoor venue. Keep the pier and a separately purchased cruise distinct.
The choiceThe public promenade, museum, Grand Halls and high deck have separate arrangements.

西岸
West Bund
Galleries, concrete vaults and reused industrial structures
Choose the exhibition you actually want before travelling. An open riverside walk does not establish current access to a gallery or pavilion.
The choiceSeparate museums, different programmes and no single district-wide ticket.

朱家角
Zhujiajiao
Canals, bridges, gardens and old trading streets
Make one garden or historical thread the anchor, then leave room for the town. The detailed guide explains the current pass, boat units and usable illustrated map.
The choicePublic lanes, paid interiors and a boat are separate purchases.

南翔
Nanxiang
Bamboo, restored brick pagodas and soup-dumpling craft
Start with the setting you want. The detailed guide keeps gate calendars, scholarly foundation questions, food heritage and reconstructed spaces distinct.
The choiceGuyi Garden and the old streets are different destinations; Tanyuan is a reconstructed garden.
Read the in-depth guide11 · An interior visit or a short exterior look
静安寺
Jing’an Temple
Timber, sculpture and roof detail within the busy city
Choose the interior for the main hall and details, or keep a street-and-park pause. Current ticket conditions still need the temple’s own notice.
The choiceThe visible compound includes substantial modern rebuilding; an evening view does not imply open halls.

Read the in-depth guideTime is part of the experience
Give the days a shape.
These are full sightseeing days. Add your arrival, departure and any intercity travel around them. The outlines do not automatically change your saved itinerary.
A week with arrival and departure around it
Give the city a little breathing room.
- Keep
- Central landmarks, a cultural choice and one out-of-centre day.
- The trade-off
- A museum or art venue is a choice, not a collection to complete.
Historic frontage and a garden
Choose a manageable Bund section and a deliberate Yu Garden visit. Reorder for Monday closure; leave the evening flexible.
Collections in Pudong, with an optional high view
Make Museum East the anchor. Add the tower only if the conditions, product and your energy fit; allow for the separate journey.
Smaller streets and a temple choice
Give Wukang and Anfu time, then choose an interior or exterior Jing’an visit. The outline does not establish one continuous measured walk.
Choose the art or heritage day
Pick M50, West Bund or a Xintiandi heritage visit as the anchor. Do not turn the three alternatives into one rushed circuit.
Choose a garden day or a water town
Pick Nanxiang or Zhujiajiao, not both by default. Protect the return journey and choose paid interiors or a boat separately.
Reorder around confirmed reservations, weekly closures and weather. These are editorial outlines, not timed journeys or confirmed admissions. The itinerary builder has its own supported route patterns.
Open the itinerary builderChoose a base
Make the hotel fit your actual days.
These are areas to investigate, not inspected hotels or live recommendations. Compare the exact entrance, walk to a useful station, road crossings, lifts, room noise and luggage arrangements. A famous district can cover much more ground than the hotel listing suggests.
Ask the property about your arrival time, passport check-in, payment and deposit, and any assistance you need. The public-security guidance places hotel-stay registration with the hotel.[7]
People’s Square / Nanjing Road
Investigate a central base if the riverfront and old-city visits are priorities. Our suggestion: compare an easier station approach with the premium for a waterfront address. A room’s actual orientation matters more than the phrase “river view”.
West Nanjing Road / Jing’an
Investigate this area if a neighbourhood evening, temple exterior and smaller-scale street time appeal. Save the precise station and hotel address; “Jing’an” alone is a broad location. Choose the room and access that work for you rather than expecting every block to feel the same.
Huaihai Road / Xintiandi / the tree-lined streets
Investigate a street-based stay if you want cafés, architectural detail and room to wander. Check the door-to-station route, traffic noise and any stairs with luggage. A lane address may offer atmosphere and a less convenient vehicle approach.
Lujiazui / a Pudong base
Investigate Pudong if its museum, skyline or a particular property is central to your visit. Compare crossings to the Puxi places you want. A skyline-view hotel and a convenient base for every street outing are different priorities.
An airport or railway-station night
Choose this for a specific early or late connection, after checking the actual terminal or station on your booking. Count the effect on your sightseeing journeys as well as the transfer it saves. A Hongqiao airport hotel is not automatically beside the railway platform you need.
Read the full name
Two airports, several railway stations.
Save the Chinese hotel address, your actual arrival terminal and the onward station before travelling. Keep the arrival day flexible for border formalities, luggage, transport and check-in. None of the times below is a guaranteed connection.
PVG · Shanghai Pudong International Airport / 上海浦东国际机场
Line 2 serves Pudong Airport T1 & T2. The Maglev goes to Longyang Road, with a further connection for many city destinations; it is not the Airport Link Line.[1]
Our suggestion: choose after comparing the hotel’s exact location, luggage, the day’s operating notice and the onward connection. Do not treat the short rail portion of a journey as the total airport-to-room time.
SHA · Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport / 上海虹桥国际机场
The airport guide identifies Line 10 at Terminal 1 and Lines 2 and 10 at Terminal 2. Read the terminal as well as SHA before choosing the route.[1]
Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 and Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station share a large transport hub, but they are different destinations. Allow for the actual path, luggage and security rather than assuming an immediate platform transfer.
Airport Link Line / 市域机场联络线
The line connects Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 with Pudong Airport T1 & T2. The published full journey is about 40 minutes and CNY 26. Those are train-journey figures, not a flight-connection guarantee.[2]
Our suggestion: add terminal walking, waiting, any separate rail transfer and airline formalities. Use the current operator timetable for your actual direction; old opening-day first/last trains are not used here as today’s universal schedule.
Read the railway station on your ticket
Shanghai Railway Station / 上海站, Shanghai Hongqiao / 上海虹桥站, Shanghai South / 上海南站 and Shanghai Songjiang / 上海松江站 are distinct stations. The municipal guide also lists Nanxiang North / 南翔北站, which is not the Line 11 Nanxiang metro stop.[3]
The official railway booking channel is 12306. The city’s rail guide describes the English app, passport-based booking and manual inspection where needed. Carry the original travel document required for your actual journey; registration and boarding have not been tested here.[4]
Choose the connection
Use the network without overcomplicating it.
Plan to the actual entrance, not only the nearest station name. Our suggestion: use current station diagrams, leave interchange time with luggage, and check the final journey home before committing to a late activity.
Ordinary metro tickets and passes
The current municipal guide lists a CNY 18 one-day pass for 24 hours and a CNY 45 three-day pass for 72 hours from first entry. They exclude the Maglev and suburban railway lines opened in or after 2024, including the Airport Link Line.[5]
A transport QR code, a stored-value Shanghai Pass, a metro day pass and a separately marketed visitor bundle are different products. Compare coverage and activation, not just the number of days. No pass or payment account is activated by this website.
A bank card can be an option
Shanghai Metro’s expanded Tap to Ride pilot includes eligible contactless Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB cards. Technical eligibility and payment settings matter; not every card or phone wallet is guaranteed to work. Ask the station service centre or your issuer if it fails.[6]
The municipal metro guide also describes international-card ticket purchase at station service centres. Keep a supported alternative rather than building the whole first journey around an untested app.[5]
Public ferry or a commercial cruise?
The published pedestrian public-ferry fare is CNY 2. Dongjin, Dongfu and Taigong are different routes with different endpoints and timetables. A public crossing is not the same purchase as a sightseeing cruise.[10]
Dongjin is listed as a daytime route. For an evening crossing, check the actual route and the latest Shanghai Ferry notice rather than assuming every pier has the same last departure. Weather can change operation.[10]
A taxi or ride-hailing journey
Our suggestion: save the full Chinese address, use the airport’s official queue or a clearly identified app booking, and compare the actual pick-up place with your luggage needs. No fixed airport fare or city-wide taxi time is promised here.
Let a street visit remain a street visit
Wukang and Anfu have shops, residences and cultural venues with different access. Our suggestion: keep doorways clear and treat an attractive private interior as private unless it is explicitly open. A café stop is optional, not the price of enjoying the architecture.
Reserve the anchor
Know what the booking buys.
Choose the actual venue, branch and product before reserving. Public streets, ordinary collection entry, a paid garden, a religious-site ticket and an additional show have different arrangements. Open the full place guide for its dated evidence and remaining uncertainties.
| Visit | Arrange this visit | The useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| The Bund | Choose public riverfront time or a particular building visit. | A promenade photograph does not grant access to a bank, hotel or other interior. |
| Yu Garden | Gate windows and the official 上海豫园 mini-program are published purchase options; Monday closure normally applies.[17] | Paid daytime garden, surrounding lanes and a separately confirmed night product are different choices. |
| Shanghai Museum East | No general individual reservation; original valid ID and the B1 East Gate. Special spaces still need reservations.[15][16] | Tuesday closure; People’s Square has a separately ticketed Americas exhibition programme. |
| Wukang / Anfu | Read individual cultural-venue arrangements separately. | Public street time does not make a residence or commercial interior generally open. |
| M50 | Check the chosen gallery’s current opening and exhibition. | A park address does not give every gallery one timetable. |
| Xintiandi | The main memorial and related individually managed sites have different arrangements. | The former house-museum building’s changed use is explained in the full guide; do not buy from an old museum listing. |
| North Bund | Book the museum, Grand Halls or high deck only if that is the intended visit. | A public river interval, a ferry crossing and a commercial cruise are different experiences. |
| West Bund | Choose a current exhibition and the particular institution. | Museum admission, an extra experience and outdoor riverside space are distinct. |
| Zhujiajiao | Public lanes, the named pass and boat purchases are separate. | The full guide distinguishes price per boat from price per passenger and records departure discrepancies. |
| Nanxiang | Choose the garden and gate before checking its current notice. | Guyi Garden, old streets and Tanyuan are not one common garden entrance or ticket. |
| Jing’an Temple | Confirm the current temple notice and intended date. | A dated fee, an anecdote about walk-up purchase and an actual completed reservation are different evidence. |
| Shanghai Tower | Read the included floors, entry time and any extra session. | A starting price or drink package does not establish SKY632 inclusion or a clear view. |

Time and energy
Let the day’s conditions shape the visit.
The municipal seasonal guide describes warm changeable spring weather, hot humid summers, autumn cooling and cold damp winters. These are broad climate patterns, not a forecast for your dates.[9]
Heat, rain and an indoor anchor
The guide identifies early-summer plum-rain conditions and hot humid midsummer. Our suggestion: avoid filling the hottest part of a day with several exposed walks. Choose a museum because you want its collections and leave a proper break.[9]
Keep a lower-level alternative
Our suggestion: check the day’s forecast and venue notices before a tower, boat or outlying journey. A riverfront view at ground level and a high observatory can have very different visibility. Keep the original seller’s terms available if a booked activity is affected.
Weekdays and temporary events matter
Yu Garden normally closes on Monday except national holidays; Shanghai Museum East closes on Tuesday except national holidays. Reorder the proposed days around actual closures and reservations.[17][15]
Our suggestion: distinguish a dated festival extension from ordinary hours. An old light-show photograph or summer late-opening announcement does not establish a permanent evening programme.
A meal is part of the day
Start with a small order and a clear question.
Use a current menu, the branch address and the portion size. The examples below are foods to understand, not inspected restaurant recommendations or a live guide to business hours.
Xiaolongbao / 小笼包 · 小笼馒头
The 2026 food account describes thin wrappers around filling and broth, commonly pork-based, with seasonal variations. A basket makes a different meal from a large order at every stop. Ask what is inside the particular filling and broth rather than inferring ingredients from a familiar name.[13]
The photograph is a dated Shanghai dish illustration. It does not identify a current recommended restaurant in Nanxiang or promise that the same plate is available today.
Shengjian / 生煎馒头
These pan-fried filled buns retain Shanghai’s older use of mantou for a filled bun. The city’s food introduction distinguishes styles with different dough and filling methods, so the name does not promise one identical texture everywhere.[14]
Ask 请问一份有几个? / How many pieces are in one portion? Check the actual menu rather than assuming a historic unit or a photograph tells you today’s portion.
Leave room for a useful pause
Our suggestion: choose a meal near the place you actually finish, with a current ingredient and price check. A quieter lunch, a seat and time to talk can be more valuable than travelling across town for one highly photographed snack.
Prepare once, enjoy more
Keep the important details within reach.
Save addresses, document requirements and original booking confirmations where you can find them without relying on one live page. Carry the travel document required for your actual admission and journey.
Check entry rules for your passport and route
Use the current official entry guidance for your nationality, purpose and journey before paying for non-refundable travel. The site’s Field guide separates the UK visitor arrangement from US visa and transit questions; a city itinerary is not an immigration decision.
Hotel and non-hotel stays differ
Hotels handle their international guests’ accommodation registration. For a non-hotel stay, the September 2026 public-security service guide describes registration within 24 hours of arrival at the accommodation through the NIA platform, with host assistance for an initial registration.[7][8]
Check the official instructions for your circumstances and ask your host before arrival. We have not submitted a registration or tested document acceptance.
Keep a simple backup
Our suggestion: retain the Chinese address, a contact method and an offline copy of the day’s essentials. Test the service you intend to use before depending on it. This guide does not establish that every overseas account, device, eSIM or payment card will work.
Use the right help channel
The municipal guidance lists 12345 as a 24-hour public-service channel. For a venue problem, first contact its staff and keep relevant booking evidence. The published tourist-service directory identifies desks at both airports and Hongqiao Railway Station; current staffing and response have not been tested.[11][12]

Plan, then check the live part
The local itinerary builder supports Shanghai, Beijing and Xi’an. A city outline does not replace a live flight, ticket, weather or immigration check, and choosing a tab here does not change your saved trip.
Before you ask.
How many days should I give Shanghai?
Choose by interest and pace. The three-day outline is selective; five full days leave room for a cultural choice and one outside-city-centre day. Add arrival and departure separately. You do not need to complete all twelve places.
Where should I stay for a first visit?
Compare the exact hotel door, station approach and the journeys in your plan. A central address, a neighbourhood evening and a skyline-view room solve different needs. The suggested areas are search starting points, not inspected hotel recommendations.
Is Hongqiao the same as Pudong?
No. PVG and SHA are different airports, and Hongqiao Airport terminals are also distinct from Hongqiao Railway Station. The Airport Link Line serves a particular airport-to-airport route; it does not remove walking, waiting or airline formalities.
Can I use a normal metro day pass to reach the airport?
Check the actual service. Ordinary metro passes exclude the Maglev and newer suburban lines such as the Airport Link Line. Do not confuse their coverage with a transport app, a stored-value card or a separately marketed visitor bundle.
Which Shanghai Museum should I choose?
Choose East in Pudong for the regular collections. People’s Square has a separate Americas exhibition programme and different entry conditions. Use the full branch name and gate, then check any specially reserved space.
Should I do Nanxiang and Zhujiajiao?
Start with one: a garden-led Nanxiang day or a canal-town Zhujiajiao day. Choose a second outing because it interests you, not because an itinerary has an empty box. They are not the same town or a single short walking circuit.
Can a ferry replace a sightseeing cruise?
A public crossing and a commercial cruise offer different journeys. Compare the route, duration, seating, interpretation and the actual ticket. Do not use the public-ferry fare as the price of a cruise.
Will these day choices change my saved itinerary?
No. The city tabs are reading options. Use the itinerary builder and its explicit controls when you want to create or change a trip.
Keep the evidence within reach
Where the details come from.
Current municipal transport and service guidance is separated from published opening accounts, provider information and individual venue evidence. The twelve detailed guides supply the close reading and original sources for their respective places. Reused photographs retain their genuine subjects, dates, authors and licences; no hotel room or exhibition photograph is substituted for an unverified location. Community discussions identify useful questions, not representative demand or a universal ranking. Areas and full-day sequences are editorial suggestions, not measured journeys or live bookings.

How dated or conflicting information was handled
The June 2026 metro guide distinguishes ordinary metro passes from newer suburban lines. Its 24-/72-hour coverage is not applied to the Airport Link Line.[5]
The June 2025 operator Tap to Ride expansion supersedes older summaries that only described buying tickets with a foreign card at service centres. Eligibility and actual issuer/device support still need checking.[6]
An approximately 40-minute airport rail journey does not establish a safe flight connection. Opening-day timetables and approximate taxi times are not promoted as fixed promises.[2]
The two museum branches have different current programmes and closing days. People’s Square is an exhibition visit, not a closed venue; East is the regular-collection choice.[15][16]
The September 2026 non-hotel registration guide adds an official online route. Hotel handling and non-hotel host responsibilities are kept distinct.[7][8]
Community hotel discussions inform questions about station approaches and room orientation. Small threads and personal preferences do not establish a representative best-neighbourhood ranking.[18][19]
What still needs direct confirmation
- Actual hotel suitability, room view/noise, availability, registration handling and payment or deposit.
- Live transport disruption, individual card compatibility, final connections and full accessible routes.
- Completed venue reservations, concessions, current show sessions, business menus and admission transactions.
- Individual immigration eligibility and registration acceptance; use the current official service for the actual traveller.
- Every attraction in Shanghai: these twelve deep guides are a selective collection, not a claim of complete city coverage.
