Art, with room to breathe.

Three very different museums, industrial structures, and the space between them.

Choose an exhibition. Leave room for the river.

Shanghai’s West Bund brings art into a former industrial riverside: warehouses, wharf structures and railway traces sit alongside new cultural buildings. The district’s industrial-heritage route connects several of these places.[23]

The most rewarding plan is often one museum and an outdoor interval. Compare a glass-clad gallery, concrete vaults and reused fuel tanks if architecture interests you; choose one current exhibition if you would rather spend time looking closely. There is no need to collect every entrance.

Plan your visit

Three museums. Three arrangements.

Choose it for
Contemporary art, ambitious architecture and industrial history beside the river.
Pick an anchor
West Bund Museum, Long Museum and TANK have separate programmes and tickets.
Before travelling
Check the specific exhibition, venue, last entry and language of a chosen session.
Keep it flexible
Shorten the outdoor part in rain or heat. An exhibition day need not become an endurance walk.

A change on 1 November

Long Museum’s West Bund branch switches to its published winter timetable on 1 November. The current CNY 60 ticket notice is specifically for 27 October–10 November 2026; it is not a permanent tariff.[12][13]

Current, ended, and not yet open

Computer Worlds at West Bund Museum runs 24 September 2026–14 February 2027. Reinventing Landscape ended 18 October 2026. TANK’s announced Cao Shu exhibition starts 7 November; it is upcoming on our review date.[4][6][20]

The small train is a dated trial

The September announcement offers a free 800-metre sample service through the end of October 2026. The planned 11.4-kilometre extension is not an open route. Do not depend on the trial for a November visit.[25]

Match the ticket to the place.

There is no district ticket established by this review. An outdoor architectural visit, a gallery exhibition and a separately sold immersive show are different choices.

West Bund Museum sells exhibition tickets at its first-floor desk and through its official WeChat channels. Its published concessions include valid-ID student discounts and a child-height condition; foreign concession documents need confirmation.[3]

The dinosaur seller says every child needs a ticket and uses its own child-height products. Do not apply the museum’s ordinary under-1.3-metre child policy to this separately sold show.[11][3]

Start with the actual exhibition.

Choose the exhibition first, then read the venue’s original visit page. For Long Museum, the short dated ticket notice is more useful than the expired price in a September neighbourhood article. For TANK, an empty current-exhibitions web page does not establish closure.[13][19]

West Bund Museum’s public tours need advance WeChat registration and a same-day exhibition ticket. Arrive five minutes early; ten minutes late means no participation. Small groups may be cancelled. English sessions are unconfirmed.[2]

For the dinosaur show, check the actual language, admission window, child product and cancellation terms before paying. The linked commercial seller is a product reference, not the museum’s universal policy. No checkout has been completed.[11]

Find your bearings

Addresses before ambition.

West Bund Museum has avenue-side and river-side entrances. Its guide suggests Line 11 Yunjin Road and a walk of about ten minutes; this is the publisher’s estimate.[2]

TANK is at 2380 Longteng Avenue. Its original guide suggests Yunjin Road Exit 5, then Longqi Road, approximately 600 metres. Long Museum’s own guide instead names Lines 7/12 Middle Longhua Road Station, Exit 5. Start with the destination you actually chose.[18][14]

These thematic groups help you choose, rather than prescribe a continuous path. Building numbers, current pedestrian directions and entrance signs matter more than trying to follow a perfect sequence.

Choose a second architectural story

Interest groups, not a scaled map or measured route. Indoor visits have separate hours and tickets.[23][2][14][18]
Industrial layers

The city’s heritage route links the former cement works, aviation-related sites, wharf and railway remains. Their reuse is part of the district’s story, alongside purpose-built museums.[23]

March 2014

Long Museum’s own architectural account dates its West Bund public opening to March 2014.[15]

23 March 2019

OPEN’s opening announcement dates TANK’s public opening to 23 March 2019.[22]

November 2019

West Bund Museum held its opening ceremony on 5 November and opened to the public on 8 November. These are different dates.[9]

End 2024–end 2029

The renewed Centre Pompidou cooperation extends beyond the original five-year term. A page describing only 2019–2024 is not the whole current arrangement.[7]

A museum can be the anchor without occupying the whole outing. Leave an interval to compare the scale of the water, planted ground and buildings. Choose a signed public section that feels manageable, then turn back when you have seen enough.

Our looking suggestionFind a frame with foreground, river and skyline, rather than taking every photograph from the same edge.

The cultural authority’s route identifies Qidian 1907 at 288 Ruining Road with the former Nanpu Railway Station freight setting, including reused tracks and structures. Its dated public-space description is not an assurance that every commercial interior is always open.[23]

David Chipperfield Architects describes three gallery volumes arranged around a tall central atrium. The building presents different faces to the road and river rather than a single grand façade. Read the joins and changes of direction before stepping into an exhibition.[8]

计算万千世界

Computer Worlds: more than screen effects

The current exhibition, 24 September 2026–14 February 2027, spans roughly 75 years through nearly 180 works and archival items. Its seven themes connect algorithms, pixels, digital craft, networks and intelligent data. This is a history across art, design and architecture, not simply a room of AI-generated images.[5]

Our looking suggestionChoose an early experiment and a recent work. Ask what changed in the tool, the material and the artist’s decision.

07

Inside the current exhibition

从计算机城市到数字工艺

An imagined city, a manufactured object

The museum’s account includes Archigram’s Computer City of 1964: an imagined interconnected city, not a built district. Other sections follow digital processes into material craft and contemporary Chinese practice, including Wan Yang, Lin Ke and Lu Yang.[5]

Our looking suggestionRead the object label and medium before deciding that an image, model, print or physical object works in the same way.

The municipal introduction dates this immersive presentation from 27 June 2026 to 17 January 2027 and describes an approximately one-hour experience. Its 360-degree screen surrounds an on-site audience: it is neither a browser panorama nor a headset tour. The reconstructed prehistoric world is a different experience from looking at fossil specimens.[10]

Our looking suggestionCheck the session language first, particularly with children who need narration to follow the story.

Liu Yichun / Atelier Deshaus designed the museum around umbrella-like concrete vaults. The museum’s account contrasts the large upper-floor spaces with white-box galleries below. The visible concrete has a different weight and rhythm from West Bund Museum’s luminous exterior.[15]

从革命到建设

Read paintings as interpretations of history

The West Bund exhibition From Revolution to Nation-Building runs 12 September 2026–28 February 2027. The museum describes more than 80 works or groups across media, organised around revolutionary history and subsequent construction. Distinguish a contemporary record from a later historical interpretation; read the artist, date and curatorial framing.[16]

Our looking suggestionCompare the moment depicted with the year the work was made. Those dates need not match.

OPEN’s design account starts with five former aviation-fuel tanks. Their transformation combines the reused shells, new underground connections, separate gallery spaces and landscape. The project is more than a single round exhibition room.[21]

The architect describes a landscaped surface linking the tanks and new spaces below it. This relationship between landform and building is a useful thing to notice, even if you only choose an exterior visit. Design openness does not itself grant access to every gallery, roof or event.[21]

Cao Shu: an upcoming exhibition

TANK’s original announcement gives these dates and discusses technology, memory and forgetting. Cao Shu’s practice includes game installations, animation and moving-image work. On 29 October this is a future programme, not an exhibition already available to enter.[20]

Our looking suggestionBefore travelling later, check that the announced show has opened, its ticket and which spaces it uses.

西岸艺术中心 ≠ 西岸美术馆

Art Center is not Museum

West Bund Art Center at 2555 Longteng is a reused aircraft-factory workshop. The operator explicitly says the interior is not generally open when there is no exhibition or event. Its weekday 09:00–17:00 line is an enquiry schedule, not a reliable public gallery timetable.[24]

A good pause may be the most useful thing you add to the day. Choose a place where you can sit legally and comfortably, then decide whether you want another gallery. You do not have to keep walking simply because the riverfront continues.

Our looking suggestionCompare the view after looking at art: scale, colour, reflection and framing may feel different.

The announced sample runs between START Museum and the Long Museum area. Free trial service is described only through the end of October, using 西岸生活 reservations separately for each direction. Its suggested service window does not prove a seat, live departure or continuation after the trial.[25]

Our looking suggestionKeep it optional. Plan an independent return rather than assuming a sightseeing vehicle will still be running.

A different part of Shanghai

余德耀美术馆已迁址

Remove the old Yuz pin

The municipal June 2026 account states that Yuz Museum moved to Panlong in Qingpu in May 2023. Older West Bund inventories still listing its former aviation-hangar address are not current walking guides. Treat a visit to Yuz as a separate outing.[26]

Our looking suggestionCheck the current venue address whenever an old itinerary promises another museum next door.

  4. Make a deliberate finish

Save the Chinese address.

Save the exact Chinese destination from the venue’s own guide. Long Museum’s 3398 address, TANK’s 2380 and West Bund Museum’s 2600 are separate institutions.[1][14][18]

For a taxi or a map search, use the actual museum name and number rather than only “West Bund”. Confirm the current drop-off and public entrance, especially if avoiding steps or travelling with luggage.

Rest, bags and access

West Bund Museum lists lockers, an audio guide, café and accessibility facilities. TANK lists storage, a mother-and-baby room and access facilities. Equipment availability and complete step-free paths have not been checked in person.[2][18]

TANK asks visitors to store large bags and prohibits flash, tripods, touching exhibits and food in galleries. Follow any additional exhibition-specific instructions.[18]

Timing, light and weather

Choose the indoor anchor first in hot, wet or windy weather. A historical sunset photograph is useful for visual context but is not a promise of lighting, an empty path or a current evening event.

Allow room before last entry. A later closing time should not be treated as permission to arrive after the published admission cut-off.

What a free day includes

Long Museum’s first-Tuesday policy excludes special exhibitions and holidays. Ask which rooms are covered before planning around it. Its Pudong and Chongqing branches have different arrangements; do not transfer their admission policies to West Bund.[12]

Before you ask.

Do I need to visit all three museums?

No. Choose by exhibition or architecture. One unhurried interior and a short public river interval can make a complete outing.

Is everything closed on Monday?

The three museum visit guides publish Monday closure, with their stated holiday exceptions. That does not establish one opening rule for the entire public riverfront.[1][12][18]

Can I use the first-Tuesday offer for every Long Museum exhibition?

No universal free access is established. The museum excludes special exhibitions and holidays; ask which rooms are covered for the chosen date.[12]

Is the dinosaur show an online 360 tour?

It is an on-site surround-screen presentation. You need to arrange the separate physical visit; its screen format does not provide browser navigation.[10]

Is Yuz Museum still a nearby stop?

Its current Qingpu location is a separate journey. Older West Bund map pins should be removed from this walking plan.[26]

Dates, sources and photographs

Follow the evidence.

Original museum visit and exhibition pages take priority for current arrangements; architect accounts explain design, and dated municipal reports explain industrial history and trial services. Visit outlines and looking prompts are editorial suggestions, not measured or physically tested routes. Photographs were visually inspected, dated and licensed. How conflicting descriptions were handled

West Bund Museum’s direct guide resolves the older operator-hours conflict. Long Museum’s own current timetable and short dated ticket notice supersede older district listings and expired prices.[1][27][13]

TANK’s own guide gives 2380 Longteng and weekday opening from 12:00. Older directory hours are not carried forward. An empty current-exhibitions page is not evidence of closure.[18][28]

Reinventing Landscape and Wallace Chan’s Vessels of Other Worlds have ended. Long Museum’s He Duoling listing is for Chongqing, not West Bund. Upcoming Cao Shu is dated explicitly.[6][17][20]

Yuz’s relocation and the limited shuttle trial are dated separately. The September route is useful geography, not a current price list for every museum it mentions.[26][25]

Some original institution pages were readable over HTTP while their HTTPS connections failed. They are linked transparently as public information sources; no account, booking or payment was submitted. Sources with unavailable pages were not interpreted as physical closures.

What still needs direct confirmation

  • Actual passport registration, foreign concession evidence, overseas-phone support, payments and admission have not been tested.
  • Current West Bund Museum exhibition price, English guide sessions, and the scope of any selected ticket need direct confirmation.
  • Long Museum’s tariff after 10 November 2026 and exact special-exhibition coverage of the free-day policy remain unconfirmed.
  • The shuttle’s live booking availability, operation after October and planned extension are not verified.
  • Step-free paths, working lifts, storage capacity, accessible toilets, seating and current room-by-room display have not been checked on site.
  • No usable complete West Bund browser panorama has been verified.

Film verification: The original visible player advanced beyond 3 seconds. Duration: 100.167 seconds, 1080 × 1920 pixels. A presenter-and-river frame at 20 seconds was inspected. The local on-request player advanced beyond 2 seconds at desktop and mobile viewport sizes; complete caption coverage and physical-phone playback remain untested.
