Shanghai · In-depth place guide
M50创意园
Find your own way into Shanghai’s art.
Factory courtyards, independent exhibitions and time to look.
Choose a gallery, follow a detail, then take your curiosity back into the street.
M50 is a good choice for a flexible afternoon with small galleries, studios and a preserved industrial setting. You can come for an exhibition, the buildings or a conversation about something that catches your eye. A specific show is a better starting point than an old list of famous gallery names.[1]
The address is 50 Moganshan Road in Putuo, beside Suzhou Creek. The factory quarter developed into an art and design cluster from 2000. Today’s visit involves several independent doors, each with its own opening and visitor arrangements.[2]
Plan your visit
Choose the gallery before the day.
- Choose it for
- Independent gallery browsing, industrial buildings and a flexible riverside afternoon.
- Allow
- A few unhurried hours, with an optional pause. This is our planning suggestion, not a measured route.
- Plan around
- One exhibition that interests you and its own published opening day.
- Take with you
- The gallery name, building and room number in Chinese, plus a willingness to ask.
Sunday is different at different doors
ShanghART M50 closes on Sunday and Monday; island6 publishes daily hours. The venue comparison below matters more than a blanket rule.[8][12]
An old gallery list can send you elsewhere
Vanguard’s current original site lists B1–8, 9 Qufu Road in Jing’an. We therefore do not give its former M50 room as a current stop. A familiar gallery name and a Shanghai address do not necessarily mean M50.[15]
Several doors, several timetables.
There is no single ticket that establishes access to every gallery, studio, workshop and café. Use the current notice at the door; ask about admission before entering a special exhibition or joining an activity. Studios may be working spaces rather than public rooms.[1]
Venue-specific references, checked 29 October 2026; temporary notices take priority.[8][12][3][17]

The centre’s hours apply to that service, rather than every gallery.[3]
No current district-wide fee schedule or every-gallery admission was verified. Many accounts discuss free exhibitions, but a workshop, event or particular show can have separate terms. Ask before committing.[1]
ShanghART’s June–July 2026 show opened Wednesday–Saturday with Tuesday appointments. That arrangement belonged to a finished exhibition.[11]
Make one confirmed visit your anchor
Choose a venue whose own page gives a location and exhibition dates that suit you. Save the building and room, then check a recent notice. Leave the second gallery flexible in case of installation work.
If island6 is your main reason to come, its original contact page is the useful starting point. Ask about admission and access requirements directly; the published room is on the second floor, and a complete lift or step-free route was not verified.[12]
For a workshop, ask for the activity name, spoken language, duration, materials, minimum age, price and cancellation terms. Do not assume a general city article creates a drop-in English-language class.
Find your bearings
Start with a building number, then choose a thread.
Use Building 6 for visitor information and island6’s second-floor address; Building 16 for ShanghART. A building and room number are different parts of an address.[3][12][8]
The clusters below are editorial choices, not a current tenant map. Tian An 1000 Trees is a separate complex at 600 Moganshan Road. The river walk can connect visits, subject to the paths and conditions on your day.[18][4]
Factory setting & first questions
Choose an exhibition
Materials, a pause and the river
The mill closed in 1999; artists seeking studio space began moving into the old factory setting, and the art-park transition developed from 2000. These are stages in reuse, not the construction date of every surviving building.[1][6][2]
The long roadside graffiti wall was being dismantled and a new street-art project developed inside M50. A photograph of the old wall therefore needs its date.[7]
Baihe Bridge opened as a new connection across Suzhou Creek. The bridge construction view in this guide predates that opening.[19]
The visitor information centre moved into Building 6 and added English materials and cultural displays.[3]
A closer reading
What to look for.
Choose one thread rather than every room. The exhibition examples are dated; our looking questions also work when the programme changes.
Industrial setting
从纺织厂到艺术园区
Read the factory before the artwork
The old textile setting is part of the experience: former production rooms, warehouses and service structures now support exhibitions and creative work. Municipal accounts describe buildings from several decades, so a single “built in” date cannot explain the whole quarter.[4]
Look for changes of scale: a high window, a broad opening, a long wall, then a smaller gallery doorway. Ask how a room made for work changes when it becomes a place to look. This is an observation exercise, not an identification of machinery that is no longer there.
Our looking suggestionCompare a tall factory opening with the size of an ordinary entrance.
A short outdoor section
厂房之间的通道
Follow a passage, without assuming every door is public
A courtyard can reveal how buildings fit together more clearly than a list of tenants. The dated photographs show narrow passages, different wall surfaces and later additions. Use them to understand a changing site, not to locate a business from years ago.[5]
Stay within the public route and open gallery entrances. Staff-only rooms, production areas and stairs behind a closed door remain separate. When a space looks interesting but its status is unclear, ask before stepping inside.
Our looking suggestionNotice the interval between two walls and where daylight reaches the lane.

Ask the first useful question
The June 2026 relocation brought the area’s visitor centre into M50, with English information, directions, resting space and a display of Shanghai-style jade/crystal carving. It can help turn a vague wander into one purposeful visit.[3]
Ask which exhibitions are open today, then confirm at the gallery itself. Also ask about a current toilet, step-free access or a suitable river exit when those matter. English printed materials do not guarantee an English-speaking member of staff at every moment.
Our looking suggestionTry: “Which gallery is open now, and what is its building and room number?”
Any open exhibition you choose
第一次看展也有自己的办法
Begin with one question you can answer
Give one work a little time before reading its label. What is it made from? Is anything moving or sounding? Does your impression change as you stand further away? You do not need to identify an art movement to describe what you see.
Then read the artist, title, date and medium. Compare the label with your first impression. If a work interests you, ask one specific question about how it was made. You can enjoy a commercial gallery without deciding to buy anything.
Our looking suggestionPick a single detail to describe in your own words.
Building 16
香格纳 M50
A precise gallery anchor
ShanghART’s original venue page identifies this M50 location separately from its other spaces. Save Building 16, then follow the programme for that address. A show at SUHE or in Beijing is a different journey.[8]
The September–October 2026 programme offers two examples below: a solo exhibition and a Passage project. You can use the original illustrated exhibition pages to decide what interests you before travelling. Their published dates do not promise a permanent display.[9][10]
Our looking suggestionRead the venue line as carefully as the exhibition title.
Dated exhibition example: 5 September–31 October 2026
张萌:从绘画到织物
See how a memory becomes a material
Zhang Meng’s I Lost Half My Soul Here connects drawing, artist books, sound and textiles with remembered places and relationships. The gallery describes how a 2025 residency in Maastricht brought hand weaving, machine weaving and batik into her practice. A line can move from paper into the structure of cloth.[9]
Our looking suggestion is to compare a drawn line with a woven edge: what happens to rhythm, thickness and repetition? The gallery’s original page has installation images and work records. Use it as an archive after the exhibition ends; do not assume those objects remain in the room.
Our looking suggestionLook for one change that the material makes to the image.
The Passage; dated project: 5 September–31 October 2026
许丽双:Passing, Gnissap
Watch an ordinary movement become unfamiliar
Xu Lishuang’s project uses the body, everyday actions and industrial objects to reconsider movement and perception. The original page lists performance, video and installation as parts of her practice. That description does not promise a live performance during an ordinary gallery visit.[10]
Begin with an action: passing through, pressing, reversing or waiting. What changes when a familiar action is given a different direction or a tool? If you visit later, the archived project can still suggest a way to look at another exhibition.
Our looking suggestionWatch a sequence through once before deciding what it seems to do.
Building 6, second floor
六岛艺术中心 · Liu Dao
Paper, performance and a circuit of light
Liu Dao is a Shanghai collective formed in 2006. Its original account explains a collaborative process joining hand-made painting, paper cutting and calligraphy with filmed performance, animation, video, LEDs and electronics. The finished work is credited to the collective, with contributors involved at different stages.[13]
Look at how a physical surface and a moving element share the image. Stay long enough to notice a loop or a small change, where one is present. The public exhibition space and the production studio have different boundaries; a making process described online is not a guaranteed workshop or backstage tour.[13]
Our looking suggestionWhere does the hand-made part meet the moving image?
Confirm the present room before visiting
索美 M50 画廊
Ask a gallery about its own point of view
Suomei’s original page describes a focus on contemporary Asian art and gives its M50 location and official social accounts. Its current room, daily hours and live programme were not established in the checked page; use the visitor centre or contact the gallery before making it your essential stop.[14]
A useful question is what the gallery chose to bring together in this particular exhibition. Look for a relationship between two works rather than trying to cover the entire room. Our guide does not rank the gallery or endorse a purchase.
Our looking suggestionChoose two works and ask what connects them.
Historic images and current surface conditions
涂鸦与公共墙面
Treat a wall as a changing exhibition
The tourism authority’s September 2020 account records the removal of the long roadside wall and a new project on walls inside M50. Older wall photographs are therefore historical records, not a map of what can be found today.[7]
A July 2026 original report highlights the large Fengjing Shan mural at an entrance-side building. Ask for its current location and condition rather than matching an old image to every painted wall. Works, surfaces and exhibitions change.[6]
Our looking suggestionLook at how a painted surface relates to the shape of its building.
Individual businesses; bookings checked separately
文房材料与手作空间
Find a material you would like to understand
A March 2026 municipal feature gives several specific leads: Boyard for study materials in Building 8, Room 111; Glassy Today for glass-making activities in Building 0, ground floor; and Qushui Space’s tea/cultural activities in Building 13, Room 101. These are dated leads, not current reservations.[16]
Choose one material or activity, then ask what you can actually try. For glass, confirm age and instruction; for ink or paper, ask staff how they differ. Check the complete price and whether finished work can be taken away. Participation and overseas payment have not been tested.
Our looking suggestionAsk for one practical demonstration rather than assuming a full class is available.
Building 8; check the current business
水塔咖啡
The water tower as a place to pause
A district account explains the water tower’s reuse from an artist’s studio, through a vacant period, into a café in autumn 2023. Its industrial shape supplies a reason to look even if you decide not to sit down.[17]
A March 2026 feature places Bird Water Tower at Room 201, Building 8, and Switcha in a former electrical-distribution space at Room 201, Building 5. These are optional commercial stops. Check today’s entrance, menu and seating; their former industrial use does not make them free public facilities.[16]
Our looking suggestionSee what remains visible of a building’s earlier function.
Optional continuation outside the gallery quarter
苏州河与天安千树
Let the creek change the pace
The September 2026 municipal article describes a riverside connection between M50, Tian An 1000 Trees and the cruise dock. Choose a short section if it suits the weather and your energy. Its art-month programme ended on 7 October; those dated events are not promised today.[18]
The planted terraces of Tian An 1000 Trees belong to a separate complex at 600 Moganshan Road. Enjoy a public view of the architecture, then decide whether its shops or food suit you. Current terrace, lift and business access are separate checks.[4]
Our looking suggestionCompare the compact factory lanes with the larger riverfront view.
Optional riverfront viewpoint
百合桥
A new crossing in an older industrial landscape
A 29 September 2025 district report says Baihe Bridge had opened to traffic on foot. It connects the riverbanks in the Changshou Bay area. The photograph here was taken in August before the opening, so it is not evidence of public access on the day it was photographed.[19]
Follow current signs if you choose to cross. We have not walked the complete approach, checked gradients or verified a step-free connection from every gallery. You can finish on the same bank without adding the bridge.
Our looking suggestionLook at the bridge, creek and planted complex as three different scales of the same view.
Choose what matters
Make the visit yours.
For a first gallery visit with room to wander.
A focused introduction
- Keep
- One current exhibition, a short courtyard section and an optional pause.
- The trade-off
- You will not cover every building or the entire riverfront.
Choose the real exhibition
Check its original venue page, date and opening pattern.
Orient in Building 6
If useful, ask the information centre for the gallery’s actual door.
Give one room time
Look carefully at one work, read the label and ask a question.
Choose your finish
Pause at an open business if it suits you, or leave before the walk becomes tiring.
Our suggested order is not a measured walking route. Installation work and temporary notices may change the available rooms.
All outlines are editorial estimates, not field-tested routes. Follow current admission rules and venue directions.
Arrival, energy and interpretation
Get the details right.
Use the building and room number
Use M50创意园, 普陀区莫干山路50号. For a gallery, add the exact building and room. Moganshan Road in Shanghai is different from the mountain destination in Zhejiang.[2]
The district lists Line 13, Jiangning Road station, within walking reach. Check current exits and your precise destination; a complete step-free approach is unverified.[3]
For a taxi, save the actual gallery address rather than only a brand name. ShanghART’s different spaces and Vanguard’s current Qufu Road address are examples of why this matters.[8][15]
A few questions at the gallery
Show a short question and let staff explain the answer. These phrases are an editorial aid, not a promise of access or an agreed price.

Qǐngwèn yǒu diàntī dào zhǎntīng ma?
For a purchase or activity, ask further questions until you understand the exact object, terms and total cost. Copying a phrase is not a booking.
A useful welcome point
Ask here about current toilets, luggage and mobility arrangements; those individual facilities were not verified in our research.[3]
Photography and studio boundaries
Ask before photographing works or a working artist. Follow each space’s rules on flash, video and equipment. An open exhibition does not include every studio or production room.
If you want to take something home
Ask whether the object is an original, an edition or a reproduction, and request the artist, medium, dimensions and full price. Check packing, delivery and receipt details before deciding. No gallery, price, authenticity or shipping service is endorsed here.
Choosing an alternative
For a single large institutional exhibition, choose the actual show first and compare its venue. M50 suits smaller independent visits and a changing programme. A quiet lane or a familiar gallery name alone cannot tell you what will be on view.

Before you ask.
Is M50 closed?
The 2026 district sources describe an operating park and visitor centre. Check individual venues separately.[3][2]
Which day should I choose?
Use your essential gallery’s current timetable; the venues differ. See the comparison above.[8][12]
Do I need to understand contemporary art?
No. Start with a material, an action or a detail you can describe. Read the label after looking, and ask one specific question if you want to know more.
Will the famous long graffiti wall still be there?
The 2020 tourism account records its removal and new work inside the park. Follow current signs and surfaces; old street photographs do not establish today’s mural.[7]
Can I combine it with 1000 Trees?
The 2026 municipal riverfront description connects the two areas. Keep the distance, weather and open paths realistic for your group; we have not measured or walked the full route.[18]
Is it a good stop for a large immersive spectacle?
Choose the specific exhibition first. M50’s value is independent galleries, studios and industrial spaces; the scale and media vary by programme. Our moving-image example does not guarantee an immersive installation or live show.
Dates, sources and photographs
Follow the evidence.
Read current gallery/operator pages and dated municipal/district sources. Community reports informed questions about expectations, shopping and older closure rumours; they do not establish operating facts. Time allowances and visit outlines are editorial. Retained genuine photographs have dates and licences and are not presented as current exhibitions.

How conflicting descriptions were handled
The original gallery timetables differ; a finished show’s special appointments do not set present hours.[8][12][11]
Vanguard’s current original address is used instead of its historical M50 room. An old gallery list is a research lead, not a current directory.[15]
The tourism article’s own date is 14 September 2020; the unrelated date in its global page header is not the event date. Its four exhibitions and festival dates have expired.[7]
Published area totals and tenant counts differ between dated reports. They are not used here as a live count of accessible galleries.[4][16]
An unreachable website is not evidence of a whole-district closure. Confirm the actual gallery or use the visitor centre rather than treating an old closure rumour as a current notice.
What still needs direct confirmation
- No on-site visit, complete accessible route, live toilet, lift, river approach or current gate inspection.
- No foreign phone, payment, passport, concession, workshop booking or purchase transaction was tested.
- Current room-by-room displays, studio access, individual fees, café menus, shipping and English spoken instruction need direct confirmation.
- No complete M50 panorama verified; gallery websites may load slowly or be unavailable in a region.
Film verification: The original visible player played 3.163067 seconds, duration 77.438005 seconds/1920 width. Gallery/visitor frames at playback and after seeking 20 seconds were visually inspected.
