Shanghai · In-depth place guide
武康路—安福路
A street is more than its famous corner.
Apartment houses, a writer’s home and the everyday life between them.
Follow the buildings at walking pace. Make room for a conversation, a courtyard view and a pause beneath the trees.
The photograph of Wukang Building is a beginning. Away from its pointed corner, the neighbourhood changes scale: compact apartments, garden houses, walls, shopfronts and doors used by people going home. You can enjoy it without collecting a long list of interiors.[1]
Wukang Road runs from Huashan Road to Middle Huaihai Road; its former name was Ferguson Road. Anfu Road adds browsing and contemporary street life. Choose a section of each, or make one cultural venue your anchor.[2][1]
Plan your visit
Choose the door, then the visit.
- Choose your pace
- Allow a flexible half-day with pauses. This is our planning allowance, not a timed or surveyed route.
- Best starting point
- The southern building corner for architecture; the visitor centre for orientation; the theatre side for an Anfu-focused visit.
- What to reserve
- A specific house-museum visit or performance, rather than the public streets as a whole.
- Remember
- Homes, visitor centres, commercial courtyards and ticketed museums have different doors.
Ba Jin’s house: plan an exterior stop
The 24 September 2026 official notice says Ba Jin’s residence is closed for repairs. No later verified reopening was found. Older schedules and hoped-for reopening dates do not establish current access.[9][10]
A visitor centre is not the whole residence
No 393A Wukang Road houses the visitor centre/Old House Art Centre. Xuhui’s June 2026 account explicitly says other parts of No 393 remain homes and are not open to the public. Do not follow a resident through a gate.[7]
Street walk, centre or museum?
Start by deciding which kind of visit you want. A street walk, a commercial stop, an exhibition and a house museum are separate arrangements. Prices and opening at one door do not apply to its neighbours.
Place-specific arrangements; temporary notices take priority.[6][9][15][16]

Soong Ching Ling’s residence closes on Mondays; the operator says closure moves to the first working day after a national holiday or special commemorative day. Its October 2026 holiday notice concerned 1–7 October and an 8 October closure, which have passed.[16][18]
For the residence, the operator directs individuals to its named official WeChat mini-program and a live purchase code. It provides on-site help for people who cannot buy online. That assistance is not a verified passport, foreign-phone or foreign-card transaction.[15]
The same article gives longer Saturday/holiday opening but asks locker users to collect before 17:00. Ask staff about the discrepancy.[6]
Arrange the visit you actually want
For a simple walk, choose your start and a stopping point. Add indoor venues only after their actual opening and admission suit your date. Keep Ba Jin’s house as an exterior stop unless a later official reopening is confirmed.
For Soong Ching Ling’s house, use the museum’s own ticket channel and bring the document it requires. The official rule says free-eligible visitors collect a paper ticket with valid identification; it does not establish that every overseas age/student document qualifies.[15]
For a play, check the precise room at 288 Anfu Road, spoken language, surtitles, running time and ticket terms. A theatre company’s international collaborations do not mean the performance you choose is in English.[11]
Find your bearings
Three threads through a lived-in neighbourhood
Begin with the southern corner and visitor centre, then choose the Hunan Road corner or a northern house exterior. These are orientation clusters, not a surveyed map.[4][3]
The theatre, Soong Ching Ling’s museum and Ke Ling’s residence are separate destinations; their exact addresses appear below.[11][14][7]
Southern corner & a pause
Wukang Road at a smaller scale
Choose a separate cultural stop
Wukang Road was first laid out under the name Ferguson Road. The street’s history and the dates of individual buildings are different things.[2]
The housing authority dates Hudec’s building to 1924; the eastern addition followed in 1930.[4]
Ba Jin’s family moved into 113 Wukang Road in September 1955. The house became a setting for his writing and family life.[10]
The visitor centre renewed its architectural displays. The neighbourhood continues to change, rather than standing still as a period set.[6]
A closer reading
What to look for.
Choose one thing to notice at each stop: a curve, a window, a line of writing, or the distance between a house and the pavement. An address label gives you a starting point; it does not give permission to enter.
Middle Huaihai Road junction
武康大楼
Read the corner before taking the photograph
Look at how the pointed site becomes a rounded corner, then follow the long face down the street. The district housing authority describes an eight-storey French-Renaissance-style apartment building, with businesses below and homes above. This explains why it reads differently from a detached garden villa.[4]
Follow the façade’s pale base, red-brick middle and pale top. Balcony lines carry around the curve. Hudec’s authorship here does not make every neighbouring house his work.[4]
Our looking suggestionNotice the rounding at the tip, and how the balcony lines keep travelling around it.
Wukang Building frontage
底层拱廊
A ground-floor edge, not an upstairs tour
The sequence of arches gives the street a sheltered edge. Pause where you can see the openings repeat, rather than stopping in the narrowest point. You can read the relationship between shops and apartments without climbing a residential stair.[4]
A published first-person account describes the writer being stopped by the building manager when trying to go upstairs. Treat residents’ halls, corridors, rooftops and landings as private. An old interior photograph or a shop doorway is not an invitation to explore the building.[5]
Our looking suggestionFrom the public edge, compare the arches with the straighter balcony bands above.
393A Wukang Road
武康路旅游咨询中心 · 上海老房子艺术中心
Put the neighbourhood in miniature
The 2026 renewal introduced 3D-printed neighbourhood models, architectural books and displays. A miniature street plan is a useful way to choose two buildings before setting out.[6]
The wider 393 address includes Huang Xing’s former home; he lived here in 1914–16. Visit the public centre at 393A, not the surrounding residences. The June 2026 film-festival pop-up was a dated event, not a permanent exhibition promise.[7]
Our looking suggestionUse a model to choose two buildings you want to compare outside.
376 Wukang Road
武康庭
A courtyard-scale pause
Ferguson Lane changes the rhythm from a pavement lined with walls to a commercial cluster. The municipal description locates it at 376 Wukang Road. CNR’s architectural account dates the garden house there to 1928 and describes a red-brick, red-tile Neoclassical composition.[3][2]
It is an optional place to browse or stop for food. Decide from the menu, actual opening and price board rather than assuming a table, public toilet or unrestricted use of every doorway. If you prefer architecture to shopping, a brief view and a return to the street is enough.
Our looking suggestionCompare the scale of the red-brick house with the much taller apartment building you left behind.
Wukang Road / Hunan Road
密丹公寓
Find the “elephant” at the corner
Midget Apartments compresses a memorable shape into a small corner site. The housing authority’s 2024 conservation account attributes its 1931 design to 义品洋行. Curved trim and pale details prompted the “elephant house” nickname.[8]
Its recent history is also a story about living conditions: residents were consulted about leaks, the roof and the entrance-hall colours. The reconstructed entrance was informed by surviving drawings, comparison and residents’ accounts because original door evidence was incomplete. Conservation here supports homes; it does not create a public interior tour.[8]
Our looking suggestionLook for the curved ornament and relief detail, then compare it with the building’s compact overall form.
113 Wukang Road
巴金故居
A writer’s address, with a real closure
Ba Jin and his family settled here in September 1955. A municipal account connects the house with personal and literary memory; CNR describes its pebble-textured walls, green wooden windows and two storeys with an attic. These domestic details give the stop a different scale from a monumental museum.[10][2]
The September 2026 official notice says the residence is closed for repairs. Keep the stop outside, read its history, and use an older garden photograph as a record. Do not build your day around an unverified interior slot or treat the separate Ba Jin Library in Hongkou as this house.[9]
Our looking suggestionNotice the house’s scale and garden boundary; avoid photographing into private or closed areas.
Northern Wukang Road
武康路99号
A roofline behind a garden wall
No 99 offers a different way to look: from the street, a garden house may appear in fragments between a wall and trees. The municipal account describes steep red-tiled roofs, red-brick chimneys and exposed timber details in an English country-house idiom. You do not need a full façade photograph to recognise that contrast with an apartment block.[3]
Use the public view available that day. No current visitor-access arrangement was established for this address; do not lean over walls, enter a gate or assume an office or home is a museum.
Our looking suggestionChoose a chimney, a dormer or a roof slope, and let that one detail be enough.
Your chosen section of Wukang Road
街景与日常生活
Read the spaces between landmarks
A garden wall, a gate, a narrow pavement and a canopy of trees shape the experience as much as the famous corner. The street contains multiple housing types rather than one uniform “French”style. The city’s district description places Wukang–Anfu within the wider Hengshan–Fuxing historic area.[3][1]
Try a short comparison: one building touching the pavement, one set behind a garden, and one shopfront. Where do people enter? What is visible from the street? This simple exercise works even when a venue is closed or a shop has changed.
Our looking suggestionLook at the street as a place used by residents, deliveries and ordinary journeys.
Photographic comparisons along Wukang Road
武康路103号与210号
Two ordinary street fronts reward a second look
Use the dated photographs of 103 and 210 to compare a garden boundary, windows, roof edges and the distance to the pavement. The frame is evidence of a street front on a particular day; it does not identify an architect, an original owner or a public museum.
This is a way to explore without an interior ticket: choose one visible feature, then look for a different solution at the next building. Let a boundary remain a boundary; the garden and the domestic rooms do not need to become part of your photograph.
Our looking suggestionCompare how the two buildings meet the street, without entering their gates.
Choose a short stretch around your destination
安福路
The changing, commercial thread
Anfu Road is a place to browse with an open mind, rather than follow an old fixed list of cafés. Municipal reporting in October 2026 records a new fashion store at 188 Anfu Road and a new concept store at 368 Wukang Road. The point is the pace of change; these reports are not our restaurant or shopping endorsements.[12]
Choose a pause for what you want now: a seat, a book, a meal or a view of the street. Look at the actual menu, minimum-spend conditions, queue and accessible entrance before committing. A colourful old photograph does not establish current stock, hours or the same business.
Our looking suggestionLeave room for something you discover on the day; you do not need to buy something at every stop.
288 Anfu Road
上海话剧艺术中心
Let a performance determine the evening
The Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre was established in 1995. Its named spaces include the Arts Theatre, Drama Salon and Studio D6, so the room is part of the booking, not a detail to guess when you arrive. The centre’s theatrical identity gives Anfu Road a cultural reason to visit beyond its shops.[11]
A performance can be a satisfying anchor for an evening, but first check language and surtitles. Leave enough time for the actual venue entrance and a meal of your choosing. We have not tested a current ticket purchase or promised an English-language show.
Our looking suggestionFind the name of your room on the current ticket and confirm it before entering.
147 West Fuxing Road
柯灵故居
A writer and critic off the main street
Ke Ling and Chen Guorong lived in Room 203 here from 1959 to 2000. The district’s June 2026 account describes letters, manuscripts, notes and daily objects relating to his work in literature and film. It is a separate cultural stop, rather than a building on the public Wukang pavement.[7]
Choose it if writing or cinema interests you, then check a current opening notice before making the detour. We did not establish a current ordinary-week schedule, passport process or step-free interior route. A past festival opening is not a year-round timetable.
Our looking suggestionThink about how drafts, letters and daily objects tell a different story from a grand façade.
1843 Middle Huaihai Road
上海宋庆龄故居纪念馆
A separate visit to a life in public service
This was Soong Ching Ling’s Shanghai home. Its main building dates to 1920; the museum opened to the public in 1988. House, collection exhibition and garden offer different threads for a visit.[14]
The museum’s recommended sequence passes the memorial square and exhibition, then domestic spaces such as the sitting room, dining room, bedroom and office before the garden. Choose what you want to understand about a home that also supported public life. That published sequence does not guarantee every room or object is open today.[17]
Our looking suggestionCompare the scale of domestic rooms with the public story told by the museum. Use the official recorded house tour first if helpful.

A corner, two façades, and a pause
- Keep
- Wukang Building, visitor-centre orientation and an optional commercial pause.
- The trade-off
- You will not cover the northern road or every house museum.
Begin at the southern corner
View the building from a safe public pavement. Use designated crossings; do not step into traffic for the photograph.
Follow the frontage
Read the arches and horizontal façade bands. Keep residential doors clear.
Orient at 393A
If open, use the visitor centre to choose one next stop.
Pause or finish
Consider Ferguson Lane on its own terms, or end the walk when you are ready.
Our suggested sequence is not a timed, measured or on-site-tested pedestrian route.
All outlines are editorial estimates, not field-tested routes. Follow current admission rules and venue directions.
Arrival, energy and interpretation
Get the details right.
Use the right address
Use the exact destination:武康大楼 for the southern corner,武康路393号甲 for the visitor centre,安福路288号 for the theatre, or淮海中路1843号 for Soong Ching Ling’s residence. These are different doors.[4][6][11][14]
For the residence, the operator lists Metro Lines 10 and 11 at Jiaotong University Station. Its published exit/distance is a venue-specific reference, not an accessibility promise or a measured walk to every stop. Check current signs and the precise address.[16]
For taxis or ride-hailing, choose a lawful nearby pickup point shown in the app rather than stopping at the busy building corner. Plan the return while you still have energy; this route does not require walking the entire district.
Luggage and a useful first question
The notice lists 2–4 CNY per hour by locker size, and collection before 17:00. Confirm capacity, payment and availability before leaving a bag; do not infer later collection from Saturday opening.[6]
Toilets, rest and mobility
Xuhui’s sanitation authority describes the汇寻厕mini-program for nearby toilet locations, hours and some accessibility information. It can be a lead for finding a current facility; we have not tested its foreign-phone access or any mapped toilet. Ask the visitor centre for an immediate option.[20]
The residence advertises luggage service and wheelchair borrowing. That does not establish a completely step-free route through its historic house. Check thresholds, stairs, toilets and companion arrangements directly if they matter to your visit.[17]
Shopping and tax-refund enquiries
A May 2026 municipal report identifies a refund-upon-purchase counter at D.I.S. in Ferguson Lane, with forms/receipts from participating merchants. Eligibility, customs validation, goods, refund conditions and the counter’s current operation require a direct check; not every purchase on the street qualifies.[13]
A considerate way to photograph
Keep doorways and pavements passable, ask before photographing a person closely, and do not frame residents through windows. Use crossings and stay out of the carriageway. Having permission to enter a shop does not include a residential stair.

Before you ask.
Can I go inside Wukang Building?
Plan the public exterior and any businesses that are actually open to customers. The upper residences, corridors and roof are not an ordinary visitor attraction. An old interior image does not create access.[5]
Is Ba Jin’s house open again?
The latest verified notice used here is 24 September 2026 and says it is closed for repairs. No later reopening was confirmed. Keep it exterior-only until the institution publishes otherwise.[9]
How long is the walk?
Our outlines are flexible choices, not surveyed distances or promised timings. A half-day can include looking and a pause; you can also choose only the southern corner. Stairs, venues and detours make people’s visits very different.
Is it all French architecture?
The municipal descriptions distinguish several styles and housing types. Read individual buildings rather than applying one label.[3]
Can I do this on Monday?
A public-street walk does not inherit a museum’s weekly closure, but indoor stops have their own rules. Soong Ching Ling’s residence publishes Monday closure with holiday adjustments; Ba Jin’s repair closure is separate.[16][9]
Which residence does the online tour show?
The linked recorded house tour belongs to Shanghai’s Soong Ching Ling museum. It is separate from Wukang Building’s residences and today’s physical admission.[14]

How conflicting descriptions were handled
The September 2026 Ba Jin repair closure takes priority over older schedules or hoped-for reopening dates. The separate Ba Jin Library and off-site events do not establish access to this house.[9][10]
The district housing authority’s Midget conservation account is used for its 1931 design attribution and reconstruction limits. We do not copy unsourced architect claims or treat a renovated doorway as fully documented original fabric.[8]
The 2025 municipal VR film-history exhibition had a 12 October end date and an on-site paid experience. It is not a current booking or an online 360-degree tour.[21]
The South Garden closure notice specified 14 October–31 December 2024. The homepage’s South Garden VR link opened a differently titled zoological-notebook exhibition during our check; it is not offered as a verified garden tour.[19][14]
What still needs direct confirmation
- No physical walk, crossing, step-free route, current streetworks or individual toilet inspected.
- Foreign passport processing, phone use, payment and concessions have not been tested. Current house-museum prices, performance booking and guide languages require direct checks.
- Current café menus, business hours, seating, shop stock and district promotions require a direct check.
- Recorded-tour publication dates, all rooms/hotspots, English labels and real-phone/GPU behaviour are not fully established.
Film verification: The original visible player played beyond 3 seconds, duration 90.767007 seconds/1080 width, and the building/visitor frames were inspected after seeking 16 seconds. English caption coverage, regional access and physical-phone playback are not guaranteed.
