Choose a service that fits
The official 2025 guide says foreign visitors can take a passport to China Telecom, China Mobile or China Unicom service offices to apply for a SIM and mobile service. Ask about data, calls, cost and activation before choosing a plan.
Questions for your provider
For roaming or an eSIM, ask whether the particular plan includes a phone number, SMS and the services you need. Do not assume every travel-data product can receive verification messages. Keep access to the number used by your bank and booking accounts.
Save the essentials
Our preparation suggestion: download your hotel address in Chinese, your arrival instructions and actual booking confirmations. Open the saved files in airplane mode before departure. Keep your battery and an alternative way to contact your accommodation in mind.
