Shenzhen · In-depth place guide
大芬油画村
Every picture starts somewhere.
A brush, a frame, a working lane. Come to look closely, meet an idea, or make a small picture of your own.
Art belongs to everyday life here.
The pleasure of Dafen can be very small: a hand adjusting a brush, a wall of frame samples, a shop door standing open to a lane. In the photographs, pictures sit beside plants, people, packaging and the ordinary business of a neighbourhood. Give yourself time to notice that mixture.
The oil-painting trade took root here with Huang Jiang and other entrepreneurs in 1989. The later story includes original art, public exhibitions, workshops and the services around a picture. It is more useful to arrive curious about those different activities than expecting every studio to make the same thing.[4]
Allow two to three hours for streets and a selective museum visit, or a half-day with a pre-arranged painting session. These are our estimates. Decide first whether you want to browse, see an exhibition, make something or discuss a purchase; each calls for a different pace.
Plan your visit
Choose your kind of art afternoon.
- Museum hours
- The organiser’s current bilingual village introduction lists 09:30–17:30, closed Mondays, free entry without reservation. Individual special exhibitions need their own notice.[1]
- Last museum entry
- 17:00 is given by Bendibao’s September 2026 holiday notice. Confirm the actual date-specific museum notice.[8]
- Independent businesses
- Galleries, studios, food stops and paid activities set their own arrangements. A museum closure is not a universal village timetable.
- Choose a purpose
- Browse a few lanes, read a show, book a session or discuss a particular picture. You do not need to do all four.
A near-term exhibition, with an end date
Longgang’s verified official Weibo account advertises 同素——当代青年艺术家实践展 for 25 September–1 November 2026, free without reservation. It asks questions about AI and artistic creation. Check for changed notices before a special journey.[7]
Read the Chinese museum closing time
The February 2025 board conflicts: Chinese closing 17:30, English 18:00. The organiser also gives 17:30.[17][1]
An exhibition archive is not today’s layout
The panorama shows the second biennale, labelled 2020. Treat it as an exhibition archive, separate from your current museum visit.[12]
A street, a museum, a studio.
Separate ordinary museum entry from a named special show, a commercial gallery and a painting session. Confirm the actual offer you want, including its date and any separate charge.
Dated and undated published references checked 29 October 2026; no live booking or price inventory.

Bendibao’s June 2026 visitor listing distinguishes ordinary free entry from some paid special shows. The photographed museum board makes the same exception.[9][17]
The September holiday notice opened 1–7 October and closed on 8 October for a rest day. Those were holiday-specific dates, not an ongoing October closure.[8]
Make the right arrangement.
For a painting session, ask for the actual studio address, language and format. Will you choose a subject, follow a demonstration or receive individual help? Clarify the medium, canvas size, included materials, minimum age, accompanying-adult arrangements and total cost.
One commercial provider, Dafen Art Hub, advertises a two-to-three-hour session with materials and English/Mandarin support. Treat this as its own offer, not a village-wide service or an independently tested recommendation.[14]
For a commission, show the actual reference and agree what is being supplied. Write down size, medium, artist or production arrangement, deadline, revisions, total price, payment stages, framing and delivery. Ask how the work will be ready for your actual departure date.
Our shortlist saves the place for later. It does not contact a studio, buy a picture, book a lesson or create an automatic Shenzhen itinerary.
Find your bearings
A neighbourhood, with several different doors.
Keep the museum, Huangjiang Square, Yuan Se Art Tribe and independent spaces distinct.[1]
The photographed 2023 community map shows named lanes, Xinfen Street, Youhua Pedestrian Street and Coffee Pedestrian Street. Use it to recognise the pattern; check present signs and the actual destination before turning.[16]
Choose two or three subjects near the entrance or museum and expand only if you want to. Shop thresholds, stairs and the street’s mixed use matter more to a comfortable visit than completing every pin.

A closer reading
What to look for.
Choose a handful of subjects and give them attention. The photographs are real, licensed and dated. They illustrate the neighbourhood and past displays; a visible business sign is not a current recommendation, and a picture’s identity needs its own explanation.
Begin by looking
村口雕塑与街头
A brush at the scale of a tree
The July 2026 photographs show an oversized hand holding a brush, a stone sign and the surrounding trees and buildings. The sculpture makes the neighbourhood’s subject visible before you enter a studio. We have not established its artist or installation date.
Look at how the hand grips the handle and how the brush reaches into the tree canopy. Then find the same subject at ordinary scale later: a real grip, a working tool and a surface being painted. The large symbol becomes more interesting when it leads you back to a person.
Our looking suggestionTake a wide view and a closer one. Use the actual crossing and keep the approach clear.
Read the vertical neighbourhood
街区尺度与日常生活
Pictures above shops, life above pictures
The elevated January 2012 photograph shows closely packed, differently coloured buildings. The February 2025 street photograph brings the view down to shops, studio signs, balconies and vehicles. These are different moments and viewpoints, not a measured before-and-after comparison.
Notice the relation between a public-facing shop and the floors above it. Dafen makes more sense as a place where people work and live than as a row of attractions built only for visitors. Stay in public areas and ask before entering a working or residential door.
Our looking suggestionLook up once, then return your attention to the pavement and the people using it.
Orient gently
巷名与步行街
A lane name is more useful than another pin
The community map photographed in October 2023 includes a north arrow, named lanes and the principal pedestrian streets. Its heading identifies a community/Party-building guide, rather than an emergency evacuation plan. Venue and service names may have changed.[16]
Use current signs to keep track of the lane you entered and one recognisable return point. If you like wandering, that can be enough structure. If a particular studio matters, save its exact Chinese name, door number and meeting arrangement rather than assuming a generic village pin reaches it.
Our looking suggestionRecognise a named lane and an easy return point. An old diagram does not establish a currently usable step-free path.
Looking without rushing
画师与工作过程
Give the person time to work
The December 2018 lane photograph shows painters working close to displayed pictures, stools and shop doors. In the older indoor photograph, creator-labelled 2006, similar compositions stand at different stages. Both are dated glimpses of work, not a promise of a demonstration on your day.
If someone welcomes you to watch, notice the sequence rather than only the finished surface: preparation, a small change, a pause, another pass. Ask before photographing a person or their work closely, and leave enough space for them to continue.
Our looking suggestionWatch a small movement for a moment. You can enjoy the visit without turning every encounter into a purchase.
Craft around the canvas
装裱与画框
The picture does not end at its edge
The 2023 framing-shop photograph shows rows of frame-corner samples and signs for mounting and frame-making. A frame is a good subject even if you are not buying: compare a thin dark edge, a brighter profile and the space each leaves around an image.
If discussing a purchase, separate the picture’s size from the outer framed size. Ask what is included, how it will hang, whether the work will travel framed or another way, and who will prepare it. Do not assume a quick-service sign from an old photograph describes today’s timetable.
Our looking suggestionCompare two frame samples against the same picture before deciding what suits it.
Architecture and exhibitions
大芬美术馆
A public museum inside a working village
The museum’s 2026 introduction identifies eight exhibition rooms on the first two floors after its 2023 reopening.[2]
URBANUS’s original project account names Meng Yan and Liu Xiaodu as principal architects. It describes a building intended to connect exhibition, trade and everyday life through overlapping uses and paths. This is design history, not permission to enter every terrace or passage today.[3]
The 2019 exterior and 2025 entrance-space photographs show two useful relationships: the museum among housing, and a view from inside back toward the neighbourhood. Give the building itself a little attention before moving into a show.
Our looking suggestionCompare the building with the street around it. Ask which floors and public areas are actually open.
A dated 2026 programme
同素——当代青年艺术家实践展
Choose a show by its actual dates
The official district post schedules 同素 for 25 September–1 November 2026, with free entry and no reservation. It considers artistic difference and agency when people and generative AI share visual material. This is a particular exhibition, not a permanent room devoted to all of Dafen.[7]
Our suggestion is to choose two works and compare what each asks you to notice. Read the artist, medium and description before deciding how a work was made. The word “AI” in a show’s theme does not identify the process of every object inside it.
Our looking suggestionKeep the artist’s actual explanation beside your first impression. Check the end date before making this your main reason to travel.
A courtyard-based choice
太阳山艺术中心
A different scale of art space
The 2025 Nanfang account describes Sunrise Art Center as Chen Qiuzhi’s conversion of an older house, combining courtyard space and several architectural influences. It lists 10:00–18:30 daily; this dated reference needs a current check.[4]
If courtyard architecture, ink or calligraphy interests you, ask what is on view and which spaces are public. Confirm any charge separately. An evocative old wall does not establish that every part of the present building is the same age, and a gallery visit need not include tea or a paid activity.
Our looking suggestionNotice a threshold, a window and the way a work sits within the room, rather than trying to photograph every corner.
Read the actual venue name
T5当代艺术中心/TNT当代艺术空间
Two contemporary-art names to keep distinct
The organiser’s current introduction places T5 Contemporary Art Center on the second floor of Huangjiang Oil Painting Art Square.[1]
A separate 2025 Nanfang profile describes TNT Contemporary Art Space, founded by frame-business owner Feng Jianmei in 2018, with exhibitions and artist residencies. These are distinct published names; confirm which door and programme you mean.[4]
If contemporary work is your main interest, choose the actual current exhibition rather than adding a space only because its name appears on a list. Ask about dates, language and any event or residency activity that is private.
Our looking suggestionRead the full name and exhibition notice before committing to a visit. A studio residency does not itself mean a public drop-in activity.
Art and everyday services
大芬原色艺术部落
More than one use under a roof
Yuan Se Art Tribe combines exhibitions, cultural products, accommodation and refreshments. Ask which areas are public.[1]
Choose the part you actually want: a public exhibition, a shop or a place to pause. Ask before going upstairs or entering accommodation areas. This is also a useful way to read the wider village: the same building can hold an art business, a service and someone’s private space.
Our looking suggestionAsk which areas are open to visitors today and whether a particular activity needs an arrangement.
Sit, compare, return
街角与休息
Leave room for a neighbourhood afternoon
The February 2025 photographs show outdoor tables, tiled-roof buildings and a bright bougainvillea-covered shopfront. They record one afternoon; businesses, menus and flowering can change. The practical idea is simple: leave room for a pause between looking at pictures.
Choose a seat that suits your needs and check the current menu, price and ingredients directly. A short rest can help you decide whether to return to one gallery, enter the museum or finish while the visit still feels enjoyable.
Our looking suggestionTake a wider view that includes people, buildings and the street’s ordinary use.
A separate booked activity
绘画体验
Make something small, with the right help
A commercial painting session can give the visit a purpose, but formats vary. Ask whether you will choose your own subject, copy a reference, follow group instruction or receive individual guidance. Confirm the language and the help available if this is your first time.
For a family, ask about age suitability, accompanying adults and whether the session can be shortened. Before starting, clarify the medium, finished size and how the work will travel. A completed session does not necessarily mean an oil-painted surface is ready for immediate packing.
Our looking suggestionChoose a manageable subject and ask how the work will be protected for your actual journey.
A useful conversation
原创、手绘复制与印刷
Ask what kind of picture it is
The 2023 shop photograph shows a sign advertising original works. Treat it as the start of a conversation: who made the actual picture, in what medium, and is it an original composition, a hand-painted reproduction or a print? A storefront photograph cannot answer those questions for today’s stock.
A traveller’s Dafen thread asks about price and same-day custom work; the response says several days may be needed. This is anecdotal, not a production promise. Ask the actual maker about your reference, size, deadline and any drying, framing or shipping stage.[18]
Our suggestion: keep a photograph of the actual agreed work or reference and the written specification, and ask for an itemised final price. You can also decide that looking was enough. No purchase is necessary to make the visit worthwhile.
Our looking suggestionBe specific about the object and the finish, rather than beginning with a generic village-wide price.
A genuine recorded panorama
2020·第二届深圳大芬国际油画双年展
Step into an earlier exhibition
The organiser’s archived online guide links a photographed exhibition tour for the second biennale, labelled 2020. Desktop rendering and rotation were verified. A later 390-pixel-width check did not finish loading. Exact capture date, all rooms and physical-phone operation remain untested.[12][15]
Use the tour for another way to look at art, especially before a trip. Keep its room and object choices separate from the programme you check for your own visit.[15]
A different historical perspective comes from the filmmakers’ account of the 2016 documentary China’s Van Goghs, following painter Zhao Xiaoyong. It is a story about particular people and a particular period, rather than a current description of everyone working in Dafen.[13]
Our looking suggestionChoose a recorded gallery view and take your time. Keep its exhibition year separate from your travel date.
Choose what matters
Make the visit yours.
A short first visit, or a day when the museum is closed.
A few lanes and a slower look.
- Keep
- An entrance view, a few open shopfronts and a pause.
- The trade-off
- No promise of museum entry, a lesson or a custom picture.
Begin with a return point
Read the current signs and choose a comfortable public approach.
Choose a few subjects
A painter if welcomed, a frame display and one gallery conversation.
Pause and decide
Return to a favourite door or finish without adding another activity.
Editorial estimate; walking conditions and individual opening times have not been physically surveyed.
All outlines are editorial estimates, not field-tested routes. Follow current admission rules and venue directions.
Arrival, energy and interpretation
Get the details right.
Aim for Dafen, then a named door.
The municipal tourism account names Metro Line 3, Dafen station, Exit A1. Confirm the current station signs and the actual route to the village; a full step-free approach has not been inspected.[19]
For a driver, use 深圳市龙岗区布吉街道大芬油画村 and then the named museum, studio or agreed meeting point. Ask for lawful pickup or drop-off. A neighbourhood pin is not an appointment at a particular gallery.
Allow room for the onward journey. Dafen is a separate outing from the Civic Center museum and Lianhuashan, and from Nantou elsewhere in Shenzhen. Do not assume all of these belong in one easy walking day.
A better question opens a better conversation.
Use the name of the actual place or activity. These questions do not reserve a session or place an order.

Museum facilities: useful dated evidence
The February 2025 visitor board lists free wheelchair and stroller loans, free storage and emergency phone-charging equipment. It directs large luggage and artworks to the counter. Ask about today’s availability and return arrangements.[17]
A complete step-free approach, lifts, accessible toilets, nursing facilities and individual shop thresholds have not been physically checked. Tell the actual venue the facility or distance that determines your visit.
Museum photography and a comfortable visit
The photographed board requires security, prohibits food in exhibition halls and disallows flash, tripods and selfie sticks. Follow the current room’s signs, including any exhibition-specific rule.[17]
In a working studio, ask before close photographs of people or pictures. Keep the doorway and the work area usable. The visit is an opportunity to notice skilled work, not an expectation that someone performs for your camera.
Taking a picture home
Ask the maker how the actual medium and surface should be handled. Confirm whether a price includes stretching, a frame, protective packaging or delivery. Check the final packed dimensions and the carrier’s current requirements before relying on a travel arrangement.
No artist, shipping service or payment transaction has been tested for this guide. Current quoted terms belong to the actual provider; our site does not place an order.
A break, in the right place
Use the current menu and ask about ingredients, seating and toilets before choosing a food stop. The photographed businesses are dated context, not recommendations based on a meal.
A visit can end after one satisfying conversation or a small number of pictures. Leave a little time to return to the subject you liked most.
A photographed exhibition archive
An earlier gallery, at your own pace.
An archived exhibition, labelled 2020, that you can rotate through. Desktop rendering and rotation were tested. The mobile-width check remained loading; try a desktop browser. Check today’s museum programme separately.[15]
Second biennale · recorded 360° exhibition
Explore photographed rooms from the exhibition labelled 2020. Desktop rendering and rotation were verified; the mobile-width test did not finish. Capture date and complete room navigation remain unconfirmed.[15]

Before you ask.
Is the whole village closed on Mondays?
The museum’s Monday closure is its own timetable. Independent businesses have their own arrangements. Choose a confirmed studio visit or public-lane browse if the museum is not open.
Can I get a custom painting immediately?
Ask the actual maker. A small session and a commissioned painting are different arrangements; size, medium, complexity, finishing and packing affect what can be ready for your departure. There is no village-wide same-day promise.
Do I need to buy something to enjoy the visit?
No. Looking, a welcomed conversation and time spent noticing a working neighbourhood can be enough. If you want a picture, ask about the particular work and terms before deciding.
Is the 2020 panorama how the museum looks today?
It records an earlier exhibition. Check the actual current programme for your visit.[15]
Dates, sources and photographs
Follow the evidence.
Research checked 29 October 2026 against original museum/organiser and district material, the architect’s supplied project account, original reporting, a dated visitor-board photograph and clearly identified commercial visitor/provider pages. Bilingual copies and mirrored reporting share source budgets. One original traveller thread informed a practical question only. Photographs were individually inspected; routes and looking prompts are editorial. No physical visit, lesson, purchase or overseas-visitor transaction was performed.

How conflicting descriptions were handled
The bilingual visitor board’s Chinese 17:30 closing agrees with the organiser, while its English 18:00 line differs. The later commercial last-entry reference is labelled as such.[17][1][8]
The ordinary entry listing does not override special-exhibition exceptions.[1][9]
A fifth-biennale call tentatively proposed October–December 2026. Selection results and an undated introduction are not a confirmed public opening calendar. We do not promise a current fifth-biennale visit.[11]
The 2025 Nanfang account and the Southcn bilingual version repeat the same underlying material and share one budget. Market-share percentages, current artist totals and drive-time claims were not adopted.[4][5]
The architect’s original bilingual project statement is design history. It does not guarantee present rooftop access or the opening of every circulation space.[3]
The actual map heading is党建导览图. It supplies dated lane context, not an emergency-evacuation certification or present business inventory.[16]
The second-biennale archive was tested through standard HTTPS. Initial loading was incomplete; the successful desktop check waited for the title and loading overlay to clear. A local-link 390px check remained at 4%; no mixed-content workaround was used.[15]
The filmmakers’ Vimeo trailer said unavailable; the festival player did not complete loading. No working video is advertised.[13]
The original traveller thread supplies a question about custom-work timing, not a verified quote or an artist recommendation.[18]
What still needs direct confirmation
- Actual station-to-village step-free route, street conditions and individual thresholds have not been physically surveyed.
- Current openings, charges and public areas of independent spaces need the actual venue notice.
