Shenzhen · In-depth place guide
南头古城
A city inside a city.
A stone gate, county-town memories and streets that keep changing. Come for the layers, and leave room for everyday life.
Shenzhen has more than one beginning.
The operator traces an administrative seat here to 331 CE, a garrison town to 1394 and Xin’an County to 1573. These are different chapters, not the age of every visible building.[2]
The streets are also part of contemporary Shenzhen. Look at the gate and the smaller heritage buildings, then notice shops, apartments and architectural interventions close beside them. A renewed neighbourhood can be interesting on its own terms without looking like an untouched ancient town.
Our suggestion: give a selective first visit two to three hours, with more time for a particular exhibition or architecture study. This is most rewarding for people interested in urban layers, small cultural spaces and a slower street visit. It need not displace the one Shenzhen experience you are most excited about.
Plan your visit
Decide what you came to see.
- Choose your focus
- Gate and history, small exhibitions, or contemporary architecture. A short list is more useful than trying every door.
- Museum reference
- January 2026 district directory: Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:50. Monday closure has major statutory-holiday exceptions; check special notices.[5]
- Keep the names apart
- The Nantou museum, rebuilt Xin’an County Office and the main Nanshan Museum are different destinations.
- Allow for change
- Small exhibitions, commercial spaces, roofs and events have separate access. Do not treat a district map as permission to enter.
A neighbourhood with separate doors.
There is no single calendar covering this whole neighbourhood. Choose the cultural space you mean, check its current notice and keep cafés, shops and any paid activity optional.
Visit choices, not a combined pass or a live availability display.

General individual reservations ended on 19 July 2024. Documents, passport procedures and crowd controls still need confirmation.[5]
Free admission is specifically attributed to the Nantou museum. It does not establish free entry to every exhibition, activity or commercial interior.[6]
Choose a few places, then check their doors.
Check the museum’s latest dated announcement for your own visit and documents. If your main reason to come is a small exhibition, confirm that exact room rather than relying on the opening of the surrounding streets.
Published contacts: operator 0755-26669990 (10:00–18:00); museum 0755-26611170. Calls and English support remain untested.[1][5]
For architecture, use the original designer’s photographs and the operator’s handbook to choose what you want to understand. Public-facing design language is not confirmation that a roof, hotel room, office floor or stair is open to you.
You can save Nantou to your shortlist. Shenzhen automatic itineraries are not yet available, and saving this guide does not replace any existing trip.
Find your bearings
Start with the gate. Then change scale.
The operator’s architectural handbook places Shennan Road to the south, Zhongshan Park to the north and Nanshan Avenue to the east. The south gate gives one useful starting reference. Its project map is an architectural index, not a current walking, evacuation or accessibility map.[12]
Use three groups of subjects: the southern entrance and museum; county-town buildings and small exhibitions; and the streets and newer architectural work. Their order should follow the places actually open and your energy. These groups do not establish distances or a continuous step-free route.
Read the entrance
Read the county town
Read the changing streets
Dongguan Commandery (东官郡) and Bao’an County were established with their administrative seat here. This is an administrative-history date, not the age of the visible streetscape.[2]
The district dates the garrison city to the Ming dynasty. Surviving gate and wall elements have later repairs and interventions.[7]
Xin’an County was established with its seat here; county administration later moved to Shenzhen town in 1953.[2]
The operator’s timeline records the 2017 architecture biennale, renewal beginning in 2019 and the north–south streets opening on 26 August 2020.[2]
A closer reading
What to look for.
Choose a few subjects and look carefully. Genuine dated photographs show particular past conditions; they do not establish current access, display contents or business availability. Some newer projects are best introduced through their designer’s own portfolio.
A threshold with several histories
南城门
Read the gate against the city behind it
The district identifies the south and east gates and surviving northern wall as parts of the old city’s heritage. The south gate’s foundation belongs to the 1394 garrison chapter; later repair means the visible building should not be described as wholly untouched Ming fabric.[7]
Our September 2025 hero photograph places the gate beside much taller buildings. That contrast is a useful introduction to the whole visit. The separate archway in the orientation photograph is not the walled south gate; look for the different forms before matching names.
Our looking suggestionFirst take in the whole setting, then the stone arch. A façade photograph does not grant access to an upper storey.
Stone and surface
宁南
Two characters above the arch
The January 2026 heritage profile identifies the stone inscription 宁南 (Ningnan). In the 2018 close photograph it is read from right to left. Look at the carved strokes and the different masonry around them rather than assigning one construction date to every block.[7]
This is a good small looking stop: move aside from through traffic, compare the inscription with its setting and keep your hands off the surface. A clear photograph can be more useful than a rushed series of poses.
Our looking suggestionFind the two stone-carved characters, rather than confusing them with a later sign on the upper building.
Excavated layers
城墙与遗址展示
The history is also below street level
The two photographs show exposed masonry beside the southern entrance, in April 2022 and March 2025. The closer view includes small interpretive labels; these are records of that presentation, not an independent excavation report.
Compare stone courses, earth and the level of the surrounding path. Stay outside barriers. Avoid turning visible shell fragments, bricks or a label into a claim about the exact age of the entire exposed area without reading the current interpretation.
Our looking suggestionLook for how the ground level changes, and leave the interpretation visible for the next visitor.
County administration
新安县衙
A rebuilt office with a useful question
The operator explicitly describes Xin’an County Office as rebuilt. Treat it as an interpretation of county administration, with a different history from the Nantou museum building outside the old town.[3]
The June 2026 photographs show the name 新安县衙 and an interior-facing entrance with the maxim 公生明. If the current route is open, look at the sequence of doors, courtyards and signs. A convincing historic appearance does not by itself establish which element is original.
Our looking suggestionAsk what was reconstructed and what the present exhibition explains. Use the building’s full Chinese name.
Trade and association
东莞会馆/宝安公所
Merchants, a street address and a closed door
The operator dates the guild hall’s initial construction to 1868 and rebuilding to 1907. The district’s heritage register places it at 81 Zhongshan South Street as a municipally protected Qing-period building.[3][8]
The June 2026 doorway photograph shows the name and an exhibition renovation notice. That is a reason to check before planning an interior visit, not proof of its status on your travel date. Another photograph records painted panels under the eaves. You can appreciate visible exterior detail from a permitted public position without promising a gallery visit.[14]
Our looking suggestionMatch 中山南街81号 and 东莞会馆. Read the current door notice before spending your visit waiting.
Memory and family
信国公文氏祠
A clan hall at a smaller scale
The operator connects this hall with commemoration of Wen Tianxiang, recording rebuilding in 1807 and repairs in 1995. The district register places it at 26 Zhongshan East Street.[3][8]
The March 2025 photograph includes the name above the entrance and the number 26. Notice the low roof, the threshold and the sequence of spaces beyond. Its appearance and past open doorway do not establish today’s exhibition or entry arrangements.
Our looking suggestionRead the place name before matching an image. Do not assume this hall and the guild hall share a calendar.
A local-history visit
南头古城博物馆
Find the right museum building
The August 2026 English district directory identifies the Nantou museum at 12036 Shennan Boulevard, with free admission and its name written by Jin Yong. This is not the main Nanshan Museum at 2093 Nanshan Boulevard.[6][5]
The February 2026 exterior photograph shows the museum name and green doors. The gallery photograph is much older, from March 2017: use it as a glimpse of a past display, not a list of objects you will definitely see now. Select one historical question and read the actual current labels.
Our looking suggestionAsk for 南头古城博物馆, not simply 南山博物馆. Confirm which galleries are actually open.
Read dates with their nouns
行政历史与城市记忆
What does “1,700 years” actually describe?
The operator’s timeline links 331 to an administrative seat and distinguishes later garrison and county chapters. Keep the noun beside each date: commandery, county, gate, office, repair or street renewal. This prevents an appealing headline from turning into the wrong building age.[2]
A March 2017 photograph shows a stone museum-name feature beside text beginning with 331. It is an interpretive object, not an ancient stone dating from that year. Look for the date of the interpretation as well as the events it describes.
Our looking suggestionWhen a label gives a year, ask what exactly happened then.
Follow a subject rather than every doorway
历史地图、牌匾与小型展厅
Choose one small exhibition
The operator lists a historical-map display on Zhongshan West Street, a plaque-story gallery on Zhongshan South Street and cultural displays in Wen Shihua’s residence. These are separate subjects and interiors. Their undated listings do not establish every room’s current contents or hours.[4]
Choose one question: how boundaries changed, what a plaque says about its commissioner, or how an object was conserved. Read the original and translation together where available. Do not mistake the museum-name stone pictured elsewhere in this guide for a photograph of the plaque gallery.
Our looking suggestionLook for a named venue and an actual current exhibition notice before deciding to go inside.
A dated photograph, not today’s shopping list
中山西街 · 2012
An earlier street scene to compare carefully
The photographer’s visible caption identifies Zhongshan West Street on 4 March 2012. Shops, apartments, laundry and everyday objects fill the scene. The photograph predates the renewal chapter described in the operator’s 2019–2020 timeline.[2]
Use it to ask what changes when an ordinary street becomes a visitor destination. Do not read the pictured prices, shop names or stock as current recommendations. A photograph documents a particular view, not the lives or preferences of every resident.
Our looking suggestionCompare building scale and street use rather than trying to find a business from an old image.
Homes and through routes
春景街 · 2012
A lane is also someone’s way home
The visible caption identifies Chunjing Street in March 2012. Low tiled buildings sit close to taller housing, with a narrow route between them. This is historical street evidence, not a promise that the same path or doorway is open today.
For a present visit, keep private entrances clear and ask before photographing someone at close range. Deliveries and everyday movement need room. A quiet passage is not automatically a public shortcut or an invitation to enter a courtyard.
Our looking suggestionA brief view from a public position can say more than entering a private space.
Contemporary architecture
城市更新与建筑介入
Look for the joins between old and new
The architect-provided URBANUS project introduction describes Nantou as a village within a city and a city within a village. Its biennale-related work is one way into the neighbourhood’s layered form, not evidence that every present intervention belongs to one architect.[11]
The operator’s architectural handbook is useful for identifying projects and designers. Read it as a project index, then compare a building’s ground floor, upper floors and relationship to the street. An architectural drawing or photograph does not establish current public access.[12]
Our looking suggestionPick one building and follow its edges: old wall, new opening, shaded passage and occupied upper floor.
A designer’s original account
if工厂/Idea Factory
An old factory, reworked
MVRDV describes Idea Factory as a 2020–2021 renovation of an existing factory, reusing its frame and introducing recessed façades, open loggias, an additional floor and a bamboo-landscaped roof. The designer’s own portfolio shows the project clearly.[10]
That original design account does not confirm today’s roof opening, tenants, visitor permissions or step-free access. If architecture is your main interest, use the portfolio to choose a detail, then ask the current operator what you may enter. Do not follow a stair simply because a travel photograph shows someone above it.
Our looking suggestionLook for how the reused frame and newer edges meet. Keep any roof visit conditional on actual permission.
Past scenes through present media
南头1820数字展厅
A reconstruction of 1820 is interpretation
The operator describes Nantou 1820 on Zhongshan South Street as a digital interpretation based on a handscroll of the town’s historic scene. It is a contemporary reconstruction of the past, not footage recorded in 1820, and not a verified online 360-degree tour.[4]
If the space is operating during your visit, ask what the presentation shows, its duration and whether English explanation is available. Devices, sessions and access were not tested on site. Keep it optional rather than making a working screen essential to your visit.
Our looking suggestionAsk which parts are documented and which have been visually reconstructed.
End with your own question
街巷与停留
Leave time to decide what you liked
After a few looking stops, take a break in a place whose menu, prices and seating suit you. The businesses visible in our dated photographs are not endorsements or promises of current availability.
You might leave remembering a small inscription, an eave painting or the close fit between old buildings and taller apartments. That is a reasonable visit. You do not need to collect every cultural doorway or treat Nantou as a substitute for all of Shenzhen.
Our looking suggestionChoose a comfortable stopping point and leave enough energy for the rest of your day.
Choose what matters
Make the visit yours.
A first visit focused on understanding the place; allow roughly two to three hours as an editorial estimate.
Gate, history and a few streets
- Keep
- The southern entrance, one cultural subject and an unhurried pause.
- The trade-off
- Fewer interiors and no assumed rooftop or event.
Begin with the gate
Compare the separate archway, gate and stone inscription from permitted public positions.
Choose one historical door
Use the museum’s dated calendar, or a currently open county-town exhibition.
Change scale
Notice the streets and modern buildings beside the older forms.
Stop while it is still enjoyable
Check a menu or return plan and leave the remaining doors optional.
This is a subject sequence, not a measured path; current closures and your energy decide the final order.
All outlines are editorial estimates, not field-tested routes. Follow current admission rules and venue directions.
Arrival, energy and interpretation
Get the details right.
Name your destination precisely.
For the Nantou museum, the August 2026 English district directory names Line 12, Nantou Ancient City station, Exit C. This is a museum approach reference; it does not establish the best exit for every old-town door or a step-free path.[6]
The operator also lists Line 12 Zhongshan Park and Nantou Ancient City, and Line 1 Taoyuan and Daxin as approaches. Exact walking times, station exits and lift routes were not physically checked.[1]
Addresses: Nantou museum, 12036 Shennan Boulevard; main Nanshan Museum, 2093 Nanshan Boulevard. Confirm your entrance and lawful drop-off.[5][6]
Ask for the place you mean.
Show the full name and ask a concrete question. These phrases do not reserve a visit.

Weather, thresholds and comfort
Much of a street visit is outdoors. Choose a comfortable time for the actual forecast and keep an indoor alternative conditional on opening. Check steps, paving and thresholds before making a longer circuit.
Accessible toilets, lifts, wheelchair rental, baby-changing, luggage storage and a continuous step-free route have not been confirmed. Ask the service centre about your specific need and exact destination.
Food, shopping and payment
Read the current menu and final price, including any minimum order or service charge, before sitting down. Ask about ingredients and allergies directly. We do not recommend a business solely because it appears in a photograph or operator promotion.
Confirm which payment method that business can accept. No overseas card, phone-wallet onboarding or merchant transaction has been tested for this guide.
Workshops and events
The operator’s calendar lists craft activities and displays with stated dates. A listing does not establish available places, price, English instruction or a session running when you arrive. Ask for the actual day, venue and booking terms.[1]
Recorded ceremonies and performances in a promotional film are not a daily programme. Arrange any must-see event separately.

- About ten seconds: architectural details, an event performance and a contemporary interior appear in the inspected samples.
- The event is recorded; this does not establish a daily show, current private-interior access or a walking route.
- Filming and publication dates are unverified. The upload directory is not treated as either date.
Original maps and design resources
Look before you go.
Use original project documents to understand the setting. Google Arts & Culture’s Shenzhen project exposes Nantou Street View links, but the inspected panorama pages remained blank after bounded loading and a drag attempt. We have not verified a working 360-degree visit.
The operator’s architectural handbook
An architectural index and project introduction. The north-up map was visually inspected; it is not a current accessibility or venue-opening map. The upload path is not treated as its publication date.[12]
Open the original architectural handbook PDFAn archival cultural-cluster guide
Useful for identifying cultural subjects. References to future 2021 openings and unopened rooms reveal its historical context; old hours, tenants and opening promises are not used as current visitor facts.[13]
Read the original archival guide PDFIdea Factory, from its designer
Project text and the designer’s photographs make the factory intervention easier to understand. Images credited to Xia Zhi remain at the original publisher; they have not been copied into our photograph collection.[10]
Read MVRDV’s original project portfolioThese are external reading resources, not bookings, live cameras or access permissions. A PDF map is a different format from an interactive panorama.
Before you ask.
Is this an untouched 1,700-year-old town?
No single age describes everything you see. Administrative history, the Ming garrison, later halls, repairs, rebuilt interpretation and contemporary renewal belong to different dates. Read the actual building and exhibition labels.
Is it worth a special trip?
Choose it for urban layers, selective architecture and street time. If you have only one Shenzhen outing and want a large preserved monument, compare your priorities before committing. Our visit-length suggestions are editorial, not a universal ranking.
Do I need to reserve every museum here?
General reservations ended in July 2024. Check individual rooms, events, required documents and current notices.[5]
Can I enter Dongguan Guild Hall?
Current reopening is unconfirmed. A renovation notice is visible on an exhibition door in a June 2026 photograph; do not rely on an undated routine-hours page for that interior.[14]
Are the county office and Nantou museum the same place?
No. Use 新安县衙 for the rebuilt county-office interpretation and 南头古城博物馆 for the separately listed museum on Shennan Boulevard.
Can I see the whole place online in 360°?
A working panorama was not verified. The short operator film plays as ordinary recorded video; the original PDFs and architecture portfolios provide other useful ways to prepare.
Will saving this make a Shenzhen itinerary?
It adds a place to your shortlist. Shenzhen automatic trip building is not yet supported, and the existing itinerary remains separate.
Dates, sources and photographs
Follow the evidence.
We read operator history, building and exhibition pages, dated district museum and heritage material, original design accounts and selected original PDFs. Each retained photograph was visually checked at full available size, with author, date and licence retained. A visitor discussion informed expectation-setting, not official visitor facts. Source review is not an on-site inspection or a successful visitor booking.

How conflicting descriptions were handled
We prefer the dated authority calendar to the conflicting undated operator hours. A 2026 footer does not date every body paragraph.[4][5]
A June 2026 photograph records a renovation notice on a guild-hall exhibition door. We do not infer either an October 2026 reopening or continuing closure from that photograph alone; no later verified reopening was found. Other visible doors in another same-day photograph do not establish admission to that exhibition.[14]
The Chinese and English museum profiles give different object and gallery counts. We omit those counts rather than inventing a reconciliation or treating all past exhibits as present displays.[5][6]
The operator’s building account and matching cultural-guide PDF descriptions are treated as one underlying source budget. The county office is explicitly rebuilt; no unverified rebuilding year is assigned to it.[3]
The stone museum-name photograph is a modern interpretive feature with historical text, not a stone from 331 or a photograph of the plaque gallery. The 2012 street captions are visible in the originals; pictured prices and businesses are historical.
Nantou’s street history is not reduced to a modern-city founding slogan. We exclude the operator timeline’s oversimplified colonial-territory wording rather than treating distinct legal arrangements as identical.[2]
The district’s August 2024 notice registers Guandi Temple as immovable heritage not yet graded as a protected unit. We do not give every cultural building the same protection grade.[9]
MVRDV’s account documents the completed design and its public-space intentions, not a current rooftop opening policy. Its copyrighted images remain at the original source.[10]
The archival PDF contains future 2021 business language and rooms described as not yet open. Its commercial listings and schedules are not current recommendations.[13]
An April 2026 Reddit day-trip discussion includes disappointment with Nantou and disagreement over its value. We use it to ask what a visitor expects from the place; a single discussion is not representative research or an attraction ranking.[15]
What still needs direct confirmation
- Current reopening of the guild-hall exhibition and other temporary interiors.
- A complete current inventory of exhibitions, objects, devices and English interpretation.
- Passport processing, actual telephone support and overseas-phone requirements at each venue.
