Beijing · In-depth place guide
什刹海与胡同
Lakes, lanes and a slower Beijing
Around Shichahai, a short walk can open up a city of water, courtyard walls and everyday life.
Choose a little of the neighbourhood. Leave space to stop beside the water.
Shichahai is a lakeside neighbourhood in Xicheng, not one gated attraction. Its three lakes are Qianhai, Houhai and Xihai. District cultural routes connect waterside walks, old commercial lanes, temples, princely residences and museums; you choose which of these becomes your visit.[1][7]
The most useful distinction is between being in the area and entering a venue. A pause by the lake needs a different plan from an afternoon inside Prince Kung’s Palace. This guide starts with the public surroundings, then explains the independent cultural stops and seasonal choices.
Plan your visit
Before you go.
- Type of visit
- Open neighbourhood and watersides, with separately managed venues and activities. There is no one admission product covering the whole area.[1]
- Time to allow
- Our suggestion: a flexible half-day for one part of the area. A short lake walk can be less; a museum plus a large circuit needs more. These are editorial estimates.
- A useful first anchor
- Yandai Xiejie and Yinding Bridge for the eastern lakes; the northern shore for Soong Ching Ling’s residence; Xihai for Guo Shoujing. Do not route every visitor to one imaginary main gate.[1]
- Best practical decision
- Choose daylight, a separately ticketed cultural visit or an evening by the water before drawing a route.
A neighbourhood, with separate visits
Walking the public streets is different from buying admission to a palace or museum. The district’s route is a list of places, not an inclusive pass. Wanning Bridge is specifically listed as free public access.[1][16]
Access distinctions · individual venues and current notices control entry[1]

Soong Ching Ling’s Beijing residence currently publishes Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, ticket sales ending 16:20 and clearance from 16:50, with Monday closure. Its adult ticket is 20 yuan. Check the operator for holiday exceptions and concession evidence; a neighbourhood walk does not include this garden.[8]
Guo Shoujing Memorial Hall is free, but published official pages disagree on late-afternoon access. The tourism reservation listing and district article give 09:00–16:00, last entry 15:30; another government profile gives 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30. Plan an earlier visit and confirm with the museum rather than relying on a late arrival.[12][14][13]
The Bell and Drum Towers are another separate visit. Official pages also differ on the Bell Tower price and the peak-season starting date. We link the competing guidance and avoid inventing one definitive tower price for this neighbourhood guide.[21][16]
What needs booking — and what does not
A self-directed public-lane walk is not the same product as a guided hutong tour. If you buy a tour, obtain its exact route, duration, language, number of passengers and inclusions before paying. Stops outside a palace do not establish entry inside it.[1][24]
For Soong Ching Ling’s residence use its own official website and ticket service. The visitor panel says eligible concession visitors obtain tickets at the window with original valid documents. Successful foreign-passport registration, payment and concession eligibility have not been tested here. Ticket enquiries: +86 10 64044205 extension 829.[8]
For Guo Shoujing, the municipal tourism reservation listing says individuals visit with valid identity documents or official WeChat reservation information; groups reserve through the museum’s own account at least three working days ahead. It lists +86 10 83224626. Confirm acceptance of your passport and the day’s closing time directly.[12]
For boats or a rickshaw, clarify whether a displayed amount is per person, per vehicle or per boat, what the duration covers, and whether a deposit or extras apply. Do not assume that a photographed boat, a street approach or an online tour description is a confirmed departure.
Find your bearings
Read the water before the lanes.
Qianhai is the southern lake; Houhai extends behind it; Xihai lies farther west. Yinding Bridge sits at the narrow connection between Qianhai and Houhai. Wanning Bridge is a different crossing on Di’anmen Outer Street, where the historic waterway meets the Central Axis.[4][7][17]
The lakes belong to a story of supplying a capital, not just a modern leisure district. The Yuan capital Dadu depended on a managed water system; Guo Shoujing’s memorial makes this engineering story easier to understand. The Grand Canal was inscribed in 2014, while the Beijing Central Axis was inscribed in 2024. These are separate heritage properties, not a claim that every lane or shop is UNESCO-listed.[15][20][19]
Pick one cluster below. The eastern crossings and commercial lanes fit a short introduction; the north shore adds a museum or temple exterior; the westward Xihai choice gives the water-engineering story more space. Connecting every cluster is optional.

A closer reading
What to look for.
These are places to choose between, not twelve compulsory stops. The looking suggestions are ours; historical and operational statements link to their sources.
Eastern approach
烟袋斜街
Yandai Xiejie: the commercial lane
The name is often rendered as Tobacco Pouch Street. The municipal account connects the lane’s commercial past with tobacco pipes, antiques, calligraphy, stationery and food; its bend toward Yinding Bridge makes the relationship between commerce and the water easy to notice.[5]
Today this is a shopping street, not an untouched residential time capsule. Walk it for its scale, signs and activity, choosing any shop for its actual offer. A traditional-looking façade is not proof of the age or origin of what it sells.
Our looking suggestionLook at how the lane changes direction. Then compare the compressed street view with the open water at its western end.
A cultural stop near the eastern lanes
广福观 · 什刹海文化展示中心
Guangfu: a place to understand the district
The tourism authority identifies Guangfu as the Shichahai cultural exhibition centre, with displays about local history, the Grand Canal and the area’s heritage. Its 2024 account describes five exhibition halls and digital interpretation. Current room access, language and opening hours still need checking.[6]
Guangfu (广福) and Guanghua (广化) are different places. The latter is the Buddhist temple on Ya’er Hutong; do not use one venue’s location or old hours for the other.[6][7]
Our looking suggestionRead the Chinese name on the building before matching it to a map search or a guide description.
Between Qianhai and Houhai
银锭桥
Yinding Bridge: the hinge between two lakes
This single-arch stone bridge crosses the narrow waterway between Qianhai and Houhai. The government’s historical account gives it Ming-dynasty origins. That is a history of the crossing, not proof that every stone you see is original.[4]
It is a useful orientation point and a narrow shared crossing. Pause where you are not holding up people, then move to a waterside position for a longer look. A distant-hill view depends on visibility; do not make clear skies the condition for a worthwhile visit.
Our looking suggestionCompare the two directions over the water, then look back at how the lanes meet the bridge.
Southern lake edge
前海与荷花市场
Qianhai and Lotus Market
The district’s routes identify Lotus Market and its dock beside Qianhai. Treat this as a place to stop, look across the water and decide how much farther you want to walk, rather than assuming that every lakeside stretch has the same character.[1]
The 2026 boat-season announcement names a Lotus Market dock among five operating points. That dated launch does not establish today’s departure time or price. It also does not turn the surrounding lake edge into a boat-only attraction.[22]
Our looking suggestionMake one shoreline view your main stop. Notice how the water changes the apparent scale of the low buildings around it.
Beyond the bridge
后海与后海北沿
Houhai: give the water some time
The official district route follows the northern shore toward Prince Chun’s former garden and Soong Ching Ling’s residence. The broader Houhai area is also promoted for evening leisure; these are different reasons to come, not a promise that every shore is quiet or every venue open late.[1][26]
Choose a manageable stretch, with a comfortable place to pause and an easy return. If music, crowds or weather do not suit you, a shorter visit is still a complete visit. This is our pacing advice, not a claim to have measured a crowd-free route.
Our looking suggestionLook back across the lake at the roofline and trees instead of spending the whole walk looking for another named attraction.
North-shore lane
鸦儿胡同与广化寺
Ya’er Hutong and Guanghua Temple
Ya’er Hutong and Guanghua Temple are both named on the district cultural route. An older municipal tourism record places the temple at 13 Ya’er Hutong. Its 2016 opening hours are not used here as a current admission promise.[1][7]
This is a religious site within a living neighbourhood. Read the current gate notices, follow staff directions and treat any exterior-only visit as worthwhile. Temple access does not make neighbouring residential courtyards public. No current indoor-photography permission is claimed.
Our looking suggestionCompare a temple threshold, a residential doorway and a shopfront. They have different functions and different expectations of a visitor.
Choose a public-lane detour
柳荫街与南官房胡同
Liuyin Street and Nanguanfang Hutong
The district’s cultural route includes Liuyin Street, while its contemporary-experience route includes Nanguanfang Hutong. The municipal selection of Shichahai walks also places Liuyin Street between lakeside and residence visits. These are named options, not a requirement to visit all the area’s lanes.[1][3]
A siheyuan is a courtyard-house form, not a promise of public entry. Stay on public streets unless a venue clearly invites admission. Keep voices low, leave doorways and deliveries clear, and ask before photographing people closely. These are our suggested ways to be a considerate guest.
Our looking suggestionNotice roof tiles, thresholds, door furniture and changes in street width from the public side. Do not open a gate to improve a photograph.
A separate palace and garden
恭王府博物馆
Prince Kung’s Palace: make it its own visit
The palace is one of the district’s cultural-route landmarks. Its courts, architectural interiors and garden deserve a deliberate museum visit, rather than a quick unplanned doorway stop halfway through a long lake circuit.[1]
Our separate in-depth guide explains the 40-yuan published adult ticket, passport credential exchange, individual buildings and a tested official interactive panorama. Use that guide’s original sources and the museum’s current notices for a visit; no palace entry is included in this neighbourhood walk.[28]
Our looking suggestionDecide whether a palace interior is today’s priority. If it is, shorten the lake circuit and keep the palace ticket and energy budget explicit.
46 Houhai Beiyan
宋庆龄同志故居
Soong Ching Ling’s Beijing residence
This is the Beijing residence in the former garden of Prince Chun’s mansion, not the separate Soong residence in Shanghai. Soong moved here in April 1963 and lived and worked here until May 1981. The operator describes the later two-storey residence alongside earlier garden buildings.[9]
The operator’s October 2026 overview distinguishes the biography exhibition, preserved living and working spaces, historical-garden interpretation and other displays. The garden itself helps explain how a former princely property became a twentieth-century home. Individual rooms, exhibitions and guided sessions can change.[10]
Use the residence’s own visitor panel for current hours, ticket sales and prices. Its printed online page also contains an old 2018 closure notice; that historical popup is not today’s closure. A 2026 April half-day closure was likewise a dated exception.[8][11]
Our looking suggestionCompare the garden setting with the residence’s twentieth-century domestic story. Leave time for the biography rather than treating the entrance photograph as the visit.
The western water-engineering option
西海与郭守敬纪念馆
Xihai and Guo Shoujing Memorial Hall
The memorial hall is in Huitong Temple on Xihai’s northern side. Its four exhibition halls explain Guo Shoujing’s life, astronomy and water engineering, including the water system of the Yuan capital and the canal connection. This gives the lakes a practical history beyond their scenery.[15][14]
Admission is published as free, with identity or official WeChat information required for individuals in the tourism listing. Current pages disagree about whether closing is 16:00 or 17:00. An early visit and a direct check are more useful than assuming the most generous timetable. The approach also includes a rise toward the memorial; no complete step-free visit has been verified.[12][13][15]
Our looking suggestionAsk what made water arrive, stay at the right level and carry goods into the capital. Then look at the lake again with those questions in mind.
Where the axis crosses the waterway
万宁桥与玉河
Wanning Bridge and the Yu River
Wanning Bridge is the Yuan-origin crossing on Di’anmen Outer Street, with a documented 1285 construction date. Government interpretation connects it with the outlet from Shichahai into the Yu River and the old canal system. It is not Yinding Bridge.[17]
The current Central Axis visitor page specifically lists Wanning Bridge as free and open all day. It remains a working public-road environment: choose a safe standing position, use crossings and respect any temporary controls. The Yu River section east of the lakes is an optional onward walk toward the Nanluoguxiang area.[16][18]
Our looking suggestionLook at the meeting of street, bridge and channel. Compare Wanning’s traffic function with the smaller pedestrian-scale crossings nearby.
A separate northern extension
钟楼与鼓楼
The city’s Bell and Drum Towers
These are the city’s Central Axis timekeeping landmarks, not the smaller bell and drum towers inside Yonghegong. The municipal 2026 walk links the Drum Tower, the square, the Bell Tower and nearby lanes. It can be a separate half-day neighbourhood choice rather than an extra loop you must add here.[21]
Tower entry is separately ticketed. The September 2026 guide and the broader Central Axis page disagree on the Bell Tower adult price and seasonal calendar. Check the current official sales notice, especially near a seasonal change. A performance timetable and a fully accessible climb are not established by this guide.[21][16]
Both official visitor pages give an off-season opening of 09:30–16:30 beginning 26 October. Check the current last-admission and ticket-sales cutoff before travelling; do not plan to arrive at the closing time.[21][16]
Our looking suggestionFrom the public square, notice the difference between the two towers’ forms and their place at the northern end of the axis. Climbing is an optional separate decision.
Choose what matters
Make the visit yours.
Visitors who want more than a photogenic street
One museum, then the lake
- Keep
- Either Prince Kung’s Palace or Soong Ching Ling’s residence, followed by a shorter water-side walk.
- The trade-off
- Do not assume both substantial interiors fit an unhurried half-day.
Choose the main venue first
Check the correct opening day, ticket and passport arrangements. Read our palace guide or the residence’s own visitor information.
Give the interior its own attention
Treat the collection, buildings or biography as the main experience, with a pause when needed.
Keep the lake as a gentle finish
Choose a nearby stretch that suits your exit and energy. Finish before the extra walking becomes a second full visit.
The venues have separate tickets and calendars. No live inventory, walking transfer time or late entry is guaranteed.
All outlines are editorial estimates, not field-tested routes. Follow current admission rules and venue directions.
Arrival, energy and interpretation
Get the details right.
Choose a starting point
For the eastern lakes and Yandai Xiejie, Shichahai on Metro Line 8 is a useful named station. The municipal 2026 tower-area route also identifies Gulou Dajie on Lines 2 and 8 for the northern extension. Use a current map for the exit and exact destination; we do not promise a particular exit or walking time.[26][21]
For Soong Ching Ling’s residence show: 北京市西城区后海北沿46号,宋庆龄同志故居. For Guo Shoujing show: 北京市西城区德胜门西大街甲60号汇通祠,郭守敬纪念馆. They are different destinations, not entrances to one museum.[8][12]
A taxi pin at “Shichahai” can be too broad. Choose the named destination, then a legal drop-off point permitted by the driver and current street controls. Narrow lanes and doorways are not waiting or parking areas. Arrange luggage with your accommodation or another verified service before a long lane walk.
Boats: a seasonal choice, not the plan’s foundation
The March 2026 launch announcement names five Shichahai docks and says different boats carry different charges and deposits. It describes pedal/electric boats bought by QR code at boarding and separate sculled sightseeing or charter boats; night operation depends on weather.[22]
Those are dated launch arrangements. They do not confirm operation on your day, an autumn closing date, English guiding or foreign-card payment. Ask at the official dock or call +86 10 66125717 about the current product, duration, deposit, last return and cancellation conditions.[22]
Winter ice: wait for the new season’s notice
The January 2026 rink announcement describes a managed winter attraction with different activity zones, ticket types and rental deposits. It is evidence of that season, not an opening notice or price list for winter 2026–27.[23]
Only use a designated rink when its operator has opened it and permitted the activity. A frozen lake or an archival skating photograph does not establish current safe access. Never turn an unconfirmed ice activity into the fixed centre of a winter itinerary.
Rickshaws and guided hutong visits
The district’s May 2026 description combines some rickshaw tours with food and tea stops. It does not publish one fixed fare, a universal route or included entry to every landmark. Get the individual product’s duration, passenger basis, route, language and extras confirmed in writing.[24]
Decide whether you want guided explanation or simply a ride. A public lane can be enjoyed on foot; a rickshaw is a separate purchase, and a driver’s informal invitation is not proof of official museum access.
Food, a pause and a little Chinese
Kao Rou Ji (烤肉季), near Yinding Bridge, appears in the city’s local-food guidance for Beijing-style roasted meat. The same source names aiwowo (艾窝窝, a glutinous-rice sweet) and pea-flour cakes. These are foods to investigate, not dishes we have tasted or an assurance of today’s menu, price or ingredients.[25]
Useful questions to show: 这个多少钱?(How much is this?) 价格包括什么?(What does the price include?) 可以看菜单吗?(May I see the menu?) Ask the business directly about allergens, fillings, alcohol, minimum spend and payment before ordering.
Residential privacy, surfaces and comfort
Stay on public lanes, keep doors and bicycle access clear, avoid peering into homes and request permission before photographing a person closely. Respect a temple’s own instructions and do not infer photo permission from an older visitor photograph.
Historic bridge approaches, narrow lanes and thresholds can complicate mobility. No continuous step-free lake circuit, current accessible toilet network or guaranteed wheelchair entry to these separate venues has been verified. Choose a short out-and-back section and contact the main venue before travel if an access feature is essential.
Carry the exact Chinese destination and an offline copy of your plan. Keep room for rain, heat, cold or a needed indoor pause; a neighbourhood guide cannot guarantee a business will be open when you need it.

Before you ask.
Is Shichahai the same thing as Houhai?
Houhai is one of the three Shichahai lakes, alongside Qianhai and Xihai. “Houhai” is often used broadly for an outing, so save the actual destination rather than relying on the area name.[7]
Do I need a ticket to walk around the hutongs?
There is no single neighbourhood admission product for the public streets. Palaces, museums, boat rides and guided tours are separate decisions with their own rules. Private courtyards are not public attractions.[1][16]
Are Yinding Bridge and Wanning Bridge the same?
No. Yinding joins the shores between Qianhai and Houhai. Wanning lies on Di’anmen Outer Street at the historic waterway and Central Axis crossing.[4][17]
Can I use a rickshaw price found in an old blog?
Confirm the actual current product first: passenger basis, duration, stops, language, extras and any museum tickets. The official 2026 tour description does not establish one universal price.[24]
Will boats or the ice rink definitely be open?
No. Both are seasonal and can depend on weather and controls. The March 2026 boat launch and January 2026 rink notice do not guarantee operation on a future visit or the next winter’s prices.[22][23]
Is Guo Shoujing Memorial Hall open until17:00?
Published official channels conflict. Two list 16:00 closure with 15:30 last entry, while another lists 17:00/16:30. Plan earlier and confirm the day with the museum.[12][14][13]
Is every hutong here a UNESCO World Heritage site?
No blanket claim is made. The Grand Canal inscription dates to 2014 and the Central Axis inscription to 2024. Their defined heritage properties are not interchangeable with every business, street or residence in the district.[20][19]
Should I combine all the museums with a full lake circuit?
Choose one substantial interior first, then a shorter lakeside section. This is our editorial pacing recommendation; the suggested routes are not field-tested or measured walks.
Dates, sources and photographs
Follow the evidence.
Desk research using district walking routes, government visitor pages, the residence operator, municipal tourism admission listings, UNESCO and the original broadcaster. Historical interpretation, dated seasonal notices and current transaction unknowns are kept separate. Looking suggestions and visit outlines are editorial, not a report of an on-site walk. Photographs are genuine open-licence reference images with individual dates and captions; current business or activity status is not inferred from them.

How conflicting descriptions were handled
A district sightseeing route is not treated as a combined admission ticket. Public streets, independent museums, active religious places and private homes retain different access rules.[1]
Guo Shoujing’s municipal reservation listing and district visit article give 09:00–16:00, last entry 15:30; another government profile gives 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30. The conflict is disclosed, with an earlier visit and direct confirmation suggested.[12][14][13]
The September 2026 tower walk lists the Bell Tower at 10 yuan and a peak season beginning 26 March; the Central Axis page lists 15 yuan and 26 April. Both agree on 30-yuan combined tickets and the 26 October off-season switch, but we do not smooth the differences into an unsupported definitive price/calendar.[21][16]
Boat hours, dock sales methods and winter rink charges come from dated 2026 season notices. None is represented as live inventory, a permanent timetable or the coming winter’s confirmed price.[22][23]
The residence website contains an archived 2018 closure popup as well as current news and visitor information. The April 2026 notice explicitly resumed opening that afternoon. Neither is a current blanket closure. October 2026 holiday interpretation is used to understand types of displays, not to guarantee daily youth guides or every temporary exhibition.[8][11][10]
Guangfu’s cultural exhibition centre and Guanghua’s Buddhist temple are different sites with similar romanised names. The 2016 temple hours are deliberately not reused as current guidance.[6][7]
The CCTV film’s episode date is 20200805, while the original verified web page is dated 8 June 2021. The guide identifies both and restricts the film’s scope to the residence.[27]
What still needs direct confirmation
- Current opening and English interpretation at Guangfu and Guanghua, plus any temporary restrictions on individual streets or private/public thresholds.
- Same-day museum inventory, passport-document handling and successful overseas registration/payment; Guo Shoujing’s precise closing time and tower ticket/calendar differences.
- Current boat and rickshaw products, prices, deposits, payment methods and language; the next winter’s rink opening and rules.
- A measured accessible route, current accessible toilet network and specific venue step-free entry.
- Restaurant quality, current menus and dietary suitability; full CCTV playback, English subtitles and regional access.
- All residence panorama scenes, models, narration, language coverage and touch-device behaviour beyond the tested narrow browser view.
Film verification: CCTV original page, programme title, residence location and republication date read. External source link only; no video file is rehosted and no full-playback claim is made.
