China in Reach · In-depth city guide
北京
Beijing.
Palaces, lakes and a living capital. Give each part of the city room to become a day.
Plan a week in BeijingFour or five full sightseeing days between arrival and departure; fewer means choosing more deliberately.
Give the Great Wall its own out-of-town day, including both journeys.
A palace or museum reservation shapes the day. Nearby does not mean a second large visit fits.
Keep the passport used for bookings with you; arrange luggage before museum and lane visits.
Beijing rewards a visit that changes scale: ceremonial courts at the Forbidden City, a hillside stretch of the Great Wall, a garden beside a lake, then the smaller world of a neighbourhood lane. These experiences ask for different tickets, journeys and amounts of energy. Start with what you want to understand, rather than how many names you can collect.
This city guide connects our ten in-depth Beijing place guides. They supply the building-by-building history, original sources and detailed photographs; here the emphasis is choosing a base, balancing your days and arriving at the correct place. The plans are editorial suggestions, not a trip we have walked or a list of confirmed reservations.
Read the city
Several Beijings, one trip.
The historic centre is organised around a north–south ceremonial axis. Its palace courts, gardens and public structures tell one story of how a capital was ordered. The UNESCO Central Axis inscription dates to 2024; the whole modern city is not one uniform heritage attraction.[32]
Use clusters to reduce repeated cross-city journeys, but keep the admission boundary in mind. Jingshan lies beyond the Palace Museum’s northern exit; Beihai is a separately ticketed imperial garden; Shichahai is a different lakeside neighbourhood. Combining them is a choice about energy and time, not a shared entrance.[15][23][24][31]
The palace and central gardens
Use the Palace Museum as a main day. Jingshan can be a short separate viewpoint afterwards if you still want the climb. Choose Beihai on another relaxed garden day if a longer palace visit has already used your attention.
The lakes and northern neighbourhoods
Shichahai, Prince Kung’s Palace and Yonghegong offer different combinations of public streets, princely architecture and living religion. A public-lane walk has no single museum-style gate; a palace visit or temple entry does.[31][27][29]
The Summer Palace
The Summer Palace is a large garden-and-lake choice in its own right. Select a connected section rather than adding it as a small stop on the way to the Great Wall. Its buildings have shorter hours and different tickets from its park grounds.[20][19]
The Great Wall outside town
Our detailed first-wall guide covers Mutianyu. It is an out-of-town visit with separate transport, admission and lift decisions. Cable-car and ropeway/slide products are not interchangeable, and a repair notice can affect a particular stretch.[21][22]
Choose what interests you
Ten ways into the city.
Each place below has a full in-depth guide. Time allowances are editorial starting points; the attraction’s own access and current conditions decide the visit.
01 · A main sightseeing day
故宫博物院
The Palace Museum
Court architecture and the life of an imperial palace
Follow the ceremonial sequence, then choose one collection or side area. The correct south entrance and the separate gallery tickets matter as much as the famous view from outside.[15]
The choiceA long palace visit can leave little energy for another museum.
Read the in-depth guide02 · A full out-of-town outing
慕田峪长城
Mutianyu Great Wall
A wall across a mountain landscape
Choose a manageable wall section and a compatible ascent/descent system. Include the return journey from the start; tower numbers on a map are not a guarantee that every stretch is open.[21][22]
The choiceTravel and steep steps make this more demanding than a central-city stop.
Read the in-depth guide03 · A selective half-day
天坛公园
Temple of Heaven
Ritual, geometry and a large park setting
Distinguish the park grounds from the main ritual monuments and the separate western sites. Monument access has a Monday pattern and shorter hours than the surrounding park.[17]
The choiceA basic park ticket is a different experience from entering the core monuments.
Read the in-depth guide04 · Half a day or longer
颐和园
Summer Palace
An imperial garden at landscape scale
Choose among the hill, Long Corridor, lake, bridge and smaller gardens. Building tickets, Monday closures and the walking connection shape the selection.[20][19]
The choiceTrying to cover every shore and building can turn a garden visit into a long march.
Read the in-depth guide05 · A shorter separate visit
景山公园
Jingshan Park
A hilltop reading of the palace and axis
Choose the viewpoint for the climb and perspective, or make time for the ancestral complex and park. Current hall access and the park’s later gate hours are different.[23]
The choiceA clear view, sunset colour and a step-free hill climb are not guaranteed.
Read the in-depth guide06 · A selective half-day
北海公园
Beihai Park
Water, island temples and intimate garden courts
The island, north-shore courts and stone or glazed decoration offer different ways into this imperial garden. Named courtyard Monday closures do not mean the whole park closes.[24][25]
The choicePark admission and entry to the specific buildings you want are not interchangeable.
Read the in-depth guide07 · One main exhibition, then a pause
中国国家博物馆
National Museum of China
Objects that make a long history tangible
Choose one collection theme and learn a few objects before arrival. Free admission still requires the right reservation and identity document, using the North Gate.[26]
The choiceA large collection cannot be absorbed simply by allowing a longer queue.
Read the in-depth guide08 · A considered half-day
恭王府博物馆
Prince Kung’s Palace
A princely residence and a carefully composed garden
Read the rear building, garden and individual interiors as a connected residence. Passport holders have a published credential-exchange step after online purchase.[27][28]
The choiceA lakeside walk outside does not include the museum.
Read the in-depth guide09 · A selective main-axis visit
雍和宫
Yonghegong, the Lama Temple
Imperial history and a living Tibetan Buddhist monastery
Learn what the main halls mean and give worshippers space. Full-price passport QR entry and reduced-price document verification are different procedures; photography inside halls is prohibited.[29][30]
The choiceReligious use and respectful observation matter more than completing a photo list.
Read the in-depth guide10 · A flexible half-day or evening
什刹海与胡同
Shichahai and the hutongs
Water, small streets and a slower public-space visit
Choose an eastern-lake introduction, a cultural visit or a short evening by the water. Public lanes, private homes and independent museums have different access.[31]
The choiceBoats, rink sessions and guided rickshaws are separate, conditional activities.

Give the days a shape.
These are full sightseeing days. Add your arrival, departure and any intercity travel around them. The outlines do not automatically change your saved itinerary.
Our suggested starting shape for a week including arrival and departure.
A first visit with room to breathe
- Keep
- One main visit each day, with a little flexible time around it.
- The trade-off
- This still leaves individual galleries, side gardens and other neighbourhoods for a return.
Imperial courts
The Palace Museum, with optional Jingshan after its northern exit.
Wall landscape
Mutianyu as its own full outing. Put this on a suitable weather day if reservations and transport allow.
Ritual and a pause
Temple of Heaven, a meal and a shorter remainder of the day. Choose which monuments your ticket must cover.
Garden landscape
The Summer Palace, choosing connected highlights rather than all the lakeshore.
Choose your cultural focus
Choose the National Museum, or Prince Kung’s Palace followed by a short Shichahai section. Use Beihai or Yonghegong as a deliberate alternative, not four extras.
Reorder around confirmed reservations, weekly closures and weather. These are editorial outlines, not timed journeys or confirmed admissions. The itinerary builder has its own supported route patterns.
Open the itinerary builderChoose the base
Choose the actual street, not just the district.
The areas below are editorial starting points for a hotel search, not inspected hotel recommendations or claims about availability. Compare the door-to-station route and the journeys you actually plan. A famous neighbourhood name covers many different properties.
Before booking, ask about late arrival, luggage, lift access, room noise, heating or air-conditioning in your season, and the accepted international-card and deposit arrangements. Official guidance asks foreign hotel guests to present their valid travel documents at reception; a booking confirmation alone is not the check-in document.[9]
Wangfujing / central Dongcheng
Investigate this side of the centre if the palace, museum and central-city visits dominate your plan. Check the hotel’s actual station and walking approach. A room described as “near the Forbidden City” does not remove the museum’s controlled southern entrance and choice of exit.
Dongsi / Dongzhimen side
A possibility for visitors who prefer a neighbourhood base on the eastern side of the historic centre. Compare your exact airport and station connections with the hotel address; do not assume that an airport-line station is a direct ride to every hotel or venue.
Shichahai / hutong accommodation
Investigate for lakeside and old-lane atmosphere. Ask how a taxi reaches the door, how suitcases are handled, whether there are stairs, and where evening music or traffic may be audible. Courtyard style does not by itself establish quiet, comfort or accessibility.
Elsewhere with a good connection
A less famous base can work if it serves your actual journeys. For an early flight or train, compare an airport/station night against the transfer from your sightseeing base. Avoid moving hotels just to save a small part of one daytime journey.
Arrival without guesswork
Match the airport. Match the station.
Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK / 北京首都国际机场) and Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX / 北京大兴国际机场) are different airports. Save the airport code and terminal from your own ticket, plus the hotel’s Chinese address. A search for “Beijing airport” is not a transfer plan.[4]
Keep the arrival day light. Immigration, bags, the journey into town and check-in can leave much less usable time than a flight’s landing time suggests. Do not place a hard-to-replace museum reservation immediately after an uncertain arrival.
Arriving at Capital Airport — PEK
Follow the airport’s current public-transport or official taxi signs for your terminal. Ask the airport service point to compare the airport rail option, onward metro transfer and taxi queue for the hotel’s actual address. A rail journey to a city interchange still leaves the hotel transfer.[4]
The municipal service description places “Beijing Service” assistance at international arrivals for payment setup, communication, transport and attraction information. Service descriptions are not a guarantee that every desk, language or product is available immediately when your flight lands.[4]
Arriving at Daxing Airport — PKX
The airport-to-city service page offers help buying airport bus and express-line tickets. For the Daxing Airport Express between Caoqiao and the airport, the October 2026 municipal notice gives a normal standard-class one-way fare of 35 yuan. That is the airport segment, not an inclusive fare to every city hotel.[5][7]
The same notice describes airline-specific free or discounted tickets through 31 December 2026, subject to the airline, fare class and redemption procedure. It is not a general free train for everyone. Do not rely on an unredeemed promotion as your only transfer option.[7]
The proposed Lize extension is not used as an operating airport connection in this guide. The government’s 2026 project report plans initial use for 2027; a construction target or old map is not evidence that a passenger train is running.[8]
For language help, the airport publishes +86 10 96158; its 2025 description lists round-the-clock English telephone interpretation, with other languages on a more limited schedule. Reconfirm present availability if you need a specific language.[6]
Arriving or departing by rail
Beijing Railway Station (北京站), Beijing West (北京西站), Beijing South (北京南站) and Beijing Chaoyang (北京朝阳站) are different stations. Use the full station on the train confirmation and your map; “Beijing” is not a substitute for checking the exact departure point.
The Ministry of Commerce guidance directs foreign travellers to the 12306 English website/app and identifies accepted travel documents for purchase. Keep the same valid passport associated with the booking ready, and allow for reaching the correct station, document checks, security and the boarding cutoff. We do not provide an unverified universal minimum arrival time.[12][13]
A late arrival or an airport change
Do not infer an all-night train from an airport’s 24-hour operation. Check the last service for your terminal and direction and the onward connection; compare a signed taxi queue or a separately confirmed pickup if trains no longer suit. PEK-to-PKX is an airport transfer, not a short terminal change.
The ordinary journeys
Move simply, keep a fallback.
The government’s specific March 2026 update says the subway supports contactless fare-gate payment through UnionPay, Mastercard, Visa, JCB and American Express. This supersedes older general-guide text that still places JCB or Amex under future/unsupported options. Your particular card’s contactless function, issuer authorisation and available funds still matter.[1][3][2]
Choose one working method for entering and leaving a journey. If you use a physical bank card or a phone wallet, follow the operator’s instructions for the same payment token; do not assume that switching between the physical card and its phone version settles the same trip. Ask station staff if a gate rejects the exit.
Other official options include a ticket bought at a machine or staffed counter, a supported metro QR code and Beijing Pass. Keep a backup rather than assuming a single foreign app or bank card will work in every context. We have not completed a foreign-account setup or a real fare-gate transaction.[2]
Maps and named destinations
Keep the Chinese venue name, exact branch and entrance information offline. The Palace Museum’s south entrance, the National Museum’s North Gate and a Shichahai neighbourhood pin serve different kinds of journey. A map search is a starting point, not proof of the correct admission gate.[15][26][31]
Taxis and pickups
Use the airport or station’s signed taxi queue, or a car you have deliberately booked. Show the actual Chinese destination and agree the current pickup point in the service you are using. A narrow hutong entrance may require a final walk; ask the hotel before travelling with heavy luggage.
Access and walking energy
A nearby metro stop does not establish a complete step-free journey. Ask about the particular station lift, gate approach and venue route you need. The hill at Jingshan, the Great Wall steps and historic thresholds require different decisions; no city-wide accessible route is claimed here.[23][21]
Reserve the anchor
Know what the booking buys.
Start with the venues whose reservations shape the day. All times below are China time, and all guidance is a source review, not a live inventory check. Reorder the editorial outlines around confirmed tickets and current exceptions.
| Visit | Published arrangement | The useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Palace Museum | Paid main admission; no same-day tickets. Published release 7 days ahead at 20:00. Normally closed Mondays except applicable national holidays, plus Chinese New Year’s Eve closure.[15][16] | The museum entrance is south; the northern view from Jingshan is a separate park. |
| National Museum | Free real-name reservations; up to 7 days ahead, published release 17:00; Mondays except national holidays.[26] | Use the North Gate within the booked session. A free ticket still needs a reservation. |
| Prince Kung’s Palace | Published 40-yuan adult admission; up to 10 days ahead, release 20:00; normally closed Mondays except statutory holidays.[27][28] | Passport holders exchange the purchase for an admission credential at the service point. |
| Temple of Heaven | Park grounds and core monuments have different hours and tickets; main monuments normally close Mondays except statutory holidays.[17][18] | An open park does not guarantee access to the ritual buildings. |
| Summer Palace | Basic park and combined tickets differ; named paid sites have shorter hours and regular Monday closures with exceptions.[20][19] | Choose the sites you want before deciding which ticket is appropriate. |
| Beihai | Park and specific courtyards have different hours and access rules.[24][25] | A named courtyard’s Monday closure is not a whole-park closure. |
| Mutianyu | Current Chinese operator policy permits reservation up to 30 days ahead; original identity document required.[21] | Transport, shuttle and compatible lift/slide choices must be checked separately. |
| Yonghegong | Published 25-yuan full ticket,12-yuan reduced; current official WeChat procedure governs the purchase.[29][30] | Passport full-price QR and reduced-price verification are different. No indoor photography. |
| Jingshan | Separate park admission and specific hall hours.[23] | A short viewpoint visit still means a climb; park hours do not define hall hours. |
| Shichahai / hutongs | No neighbourhood-wide ticket covering all stops.[31] | Independent museums, temples, boats and guided tours retain their own conditions. |

The season changes the day
Make room for the weather.
Beijing’s official climate profile describes hot, rainy summers and cold, dry winters, with shorter spring and autumn seasons. Use this for the shape of your plan, then check the current forecast and venue notices for the actual day. Seasonal scenery is not a guaranteed date in a calendar.[11]
Spring
Layers and a flexible outdoor plan help when conditions change. Choose a garden for its landscape and buildings, with blossom as a possibility rather than a promise. Check wind and notices before an exposed Great Wall outing.
Summer
Keep water, sun protection, pauses and a shorter alternative in the plan. A rainy-day museum still requires a valid reservation. Heavy-weather closures or lift suspensions can change the Wall day; a booking is not a weather guarantee.
Autumn
A useful period to consider for connected outdoor days, with layers for changing temperatures. Pay attention to the October/November change in many venue hours and ticket seasons. Leaves and clear skies cannot be reserved.[15][19][30]
Winter
Shorten exposed walks when cold or surfaces make them uncomfortable, and add warm indoor pauses. Snow and an open managed ice rink are possibilities, not fixed attractions. Museum opening and a real ticket still need checking before choosing an indoor substitute.
Meals with a little context
Make lunch part of the day.
Choose a proper meal and a pause around the main visit instead of turning food into another cross-city checklist. The city’s local-food guide connects roasted meat near Shichahai, paomo near the Drum Tower and meat pies around Huguosi with their different neighbourhoods. This is cultural context, not our restaurant tasting or a current menu inspection.[14]
北京烤鸭 · roast duck
A seated meal worth allowing time for. Ask about the portion, pancake accompaniments and what is included before ordering; a menu photograph or famous name does not tell you the bill for your group.
炸酱面 · zhajiangmian
A noodle dish often served with a savoury sauce and vegetables. Recipes and ingredients vary; ask about the sauce, meat, portion and any allergy rather than treating a dish name as a dietary guarantee.
烤肉与点心 · roasted meat and snacks
The city’s guidance names Kao Rou Ji by Yinding Bridge for Beijing-style roasted meat, along with aiwowo (艾窝窝) and pea-flour cakes. Treat these as things to investigate and see the current menu before deciding.[14]
A few questions to keep
可以看菜单吗? — May I see the menu? 这个多少钱? — How much is this? 里面有什么? — What is in it? 我对……过敏。 — I am allergic to… A translated sentence helps start a conversation; it does not establish that a kitchen can meet a dietary requirement.
Before the first full day
Do the small things once.
Confirm your hotel’s Chinese address, your connection, a working payment option and tomorrow’s reservation. Keep the original travel document needed for venue entry with you. Our site does not need your passport number and does not complete bookings on your behalf.
Accommodation registration
The current public-security guidance says hotel staff handle accommodation registration during check-in. For a stay somewhere other than a hotel, it directs the guest or host to register with the local public-security authority within 24 hours; follow its current requirements and official submission channels. This website does not collect those documents or submit the registration.[10]
Phone and offline essentials
Airport service points can help with communication and payment setup. Before leaving your connection behind, save the hotel address, tomorrow’s original confirmation, the correct venue entrance and a copy of the plan. Do not assume every external map, panorama or video works offline.[4]
Bags and a change of pace
Large luggage is a poor companion for a palace, temple or lane day. Arrange storage with a provider you have verified; venue-specific restrictions differ. Keep a shorter alternative and a food/rest pause so a small disruption does not force an entirely new day.
Make the place more legible

Explore a palace or residence online
The Prince Kung guide includes an official English panorama tested in one palace scene. The Shichahai guide links the residence operator’s panorama tested at desktop and narrow widths. The Palace Museum has its own digital-resource section. These are recorded or modelled views, not live cameras.
Watch the landscape or a museum story
The linked place guides carry official heritage films and cultural programmes with their scope, language and playback limits. A programme is historical context, not confirmation of current access.
Before you ask.
How many days should I allow in Beijing?
Our starting suggestion is four or five full sightseeing days, with arrival and departure kept outside that count. A three-full-day stay can work if you choose among gardens, collections and neighbourhood time rather than trying to include everything. This is editorial advice.
Can I visit the palace and Great Wall in one day?
Our suggested plan gives each its own day. They require different journeys and substantial time; a headline package does not establish that you will have a considered visit to either.
Does “open on Monday” mean the buildings are open?
Not necessarily. At the Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace and Beihai, park access and named monuments or courtyards can follow different schedules. Use the detailed guide for the specific area.[17][19][25]
Do I have to set up a Chinese payment app to ride the subway?
The city’s specific 2026 guidance lists direct contactless gate payment through five card networks. You may still need a working compatible card and issuer authorisation. Keep an official ticket-counter or other payment fallback; we have not tested your particular card.[1]
Is the Daxing Airport Express free for everyone?
No. The October 2026 notice gives 35 yuan as the normal Caoqiao–airport standard-class one-way fare. Airline-specific offers expire 31 December 2026 and require the correct eligibility and redemption process.[7]
Can I use Lize as the airport-line interchange now?
This guide does not treat the extension as operating. The city’s 2026 project report plans initial use for 2027; confirm an actual service-opening notice rather than relying on a construction target.[8]
Will this article automatically replace my saved plan?
No. The day outlines are reading tools. Open the itinerary builder to make deliberate changes; existing arrival, departure, intercity and locked-day protections remain in the planner.
Are these hotel and restaurant recommendations personally tested?
No. Stay areas and food ideas are research-based editorial starting points. Individual hotel conditions, menus, payment, quality and dietary suitability need their own checks.
Keep the evidence within reach
Where the details come from.
City choices and outlines are editorial. Operational claims come from linked government, public-security, venue and railway sources reviewed 29 October 2026. Existing deep-guide source decisions are preserved; published arrangements do not establish a completed foreign-document transaction. Photographs are genuine licensed images already checked in the place-guide collection, reused with their original credits. Nothing in this city page publishes or overwrites a trip.

How dated or conflicting information was handled
Specific 2025/2026 card-payment upgrade notices take precedence over the older restriction list embedded in the general subway guide. The guide does not repeat outdated 27-line counts or claim a particular foreign card has been tested.[1][3][2]
Daxing’s 35-yuan normal standard-class fare is distinguished from airline-conditional offers ending 31 December 2026. The under-construction Lize extension is not an operating transfer option.[7][8]
Park hours and tickets are not reused as the opening rules for every building or courtyard. Weekly closures and holiday exceptions are carried from the individual place guides rather than guessed from a single city-wide calendar.[17][19][25]
Hotel check-in and non-hotel registration are distinct in the current public-security guidance. Links go to the official service; this site does not request passport photographs or make a registration submission.[10]
What still needs direct confirmation
- Your actual entry eligibility and travel-document requirements; use the current official entry guidance for your nationality, purpose and route.
- Same-day transport, ticket availability, flight terminal or last service for a future journey; no booking or live fare-gate transaction was completed.
- Foreign-phone registration, card authorisation and payment success for your own accounts and venues.
- Individual hotel quality, room noise, deposit conditions, accessibility, luggage or dietary suitability.
- Temporary exhibitions, religious use, repair limits and weather closures beyond the source-review date.
